2. Created by Dick Hayne in the 70’s, Free People
was a clothing store in Philadelphia, catering to
women in their twenties.
When success grew he opened a second store
and renamed the chain Urban Outfitters.
To expand even more a wholesale line was
created, called Free People, and was bought in
department stores and boutiques throughout the
country.
Urban Outfitters was immensely successful on its
own, so in 2002 the first Free People boutique
opened.

has 77 Free People
boutique locations.
