After Girl Geek Dinner Melbourne I got thinking about a situation when I was invited to the panel as the "fattest lady in the room" (I was 30 weeks pregnant at the time. I laughed it off and said "that's ok, I don't mind him saying that, nor you ladies". And I really meant it. On my way home I thought about the situation and about the documentary "CODE - Debugging the Gender Gap" I had just seen that day. I realised the responsibility for the community I have (especially as a panelist and speaker) to actually say something. It was more my reaction to the MCs statement, not the statement itself, that got me thinking. So I started talking to the other panelists about it and we started sharing stories of diversity issues at work. We started talking to women in our workplaces and realised situations like these (and worse ones) still happen a lot (both making men and women uncomfortable). So this is where we thought it's time for all of us - men and women alike - to notice what's being said (not always easy), our own reactions to it, and our responsibility in this - for our current community, as well as generations to come.
