This document summarizes a presentation about transforming obstacles into assets. It discusses identifying the hidden asset within each obstacle and how obstacles can be "perspective dependent." It provides four gifts that can come from obstacles, including questioning, faith, perspective, and fear. The presentation teaches that problems can open new paths if we remove judgment, look for opportunities, and gain new perspectives. 1. Getting Unstuck: How to Transform Obstacles into Assets for Greater Success Presented by Claudette Rowley For the Downtown Women’s Club April 14, 2011 Presentation based on material from book Embrace Your Brilliance by Claudette Rowley copyright 2011
2. Overview During this teleclass, you’ll discover how each obstacle you encounter has a hidden asset. You’ll learn to: Identify the asset in your obstacle Understand when an obstacle is “perspective dependent.” Uncover how to reap the benefits of being stuck.
4. Definitions External obstacle – circumstances that exist outside of you that create a barrier in your path. Internal obstacle – circumstances existing inside of you, often in the form of self-judgment, fear-based thinking or a belief that limits your sense of possibility.
5. Ways to identify an obstacle You feel stuck. Your perspective is limiting you. You’re being called to act and you can’t or don’t want to.
6. The four gifts The gift of questioning The gift of faith The gift of perspective The gift of fear
7. Quote by M. Scott Peck “The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.”
8. A problem can open into a path Remove judgment that the situation should be different than it is. Notice how we’re resisting the problem itself. Look for the opportunities in it. Examine the problem more closely for messages, signs or insights. Listen to our intuition.
9. For a new perspective, ask What do I need to allow or accept? In which parts of my life do I need to stand up for myself? What’s really going on? What do I want from this situation? What can I learn from it? What role is negative self-talk playing?
10. The benefits of being stuck Forces you to step back and reflect on what you really want. Gives you time and space to let an underlying issue emerge. Lets you pause and refocus on any fears. Lets you rest and recharge.
11. How to overcome being stuck Listen to what you really want. Identify what kind of help you need, if any. Ask yourself “Am I bored? Am I scared? Am I just tired?” Ask yourself what you need right now, in this moment. Evaluate if there’s anything in your life you’ve been avoiding, no matter how small.
