8. Top 2 Goals for
Instruction with Struggling
Readers
• Goal 1: Comprehension should be key
• Goal 2: Reader enjoyment
9. Reader Enjoyment
• When student is interested they use more
of their natural brain power to learn and
remember = reading improves rapidly
• Engaged Reading is not assigned reading and
is not affected by extrinsic rewards
10. Least Effective Reading
Practices
• Focus on skills instead of comprehension
• Use worksheets or apps for each skill
• Few Choices
• Little reading for pleasure
39. Technology improves performance when
the application adjusts for student ability
and prior experience, and provides
feedback to the student and teacher
about student performance or progress
with the application.
44. BIG IDEA STRATEGY :
Challenge through Modeling
• Students are able to read materials above
grade level when modeling is used
appropriately.
• Include: paired reading, choral reading, and
listening to recorded book.
• Bypasses the decoding process, allows to read
fluently, and concentrate on meaning
53. Click on the picture of the speaker to have the question or
the answer choices read…
• Question # 1
• Answer Choices
54. BIG IDEA STRATEGY:
Match Students Reading Styles
• Figuring out what kinds of conditions tap
into a student’s natural reading style rather
than run counter to it, is half the battle.
• At risk readers tend to be global,
tactile/kinesthetic learners
55. Global Learners Need:
• Meaning is key
• High interest
• Challenging
• Holistic Reading Methods
• Reading skills through game formats
• Need movement
• Work with peers
• Choice in reading materials
• Soft light
56. Reading Styles
Approach
• Define each student’s reading style
• Global vs Analytical
• Reader’s strength’s or deficits in auditory,
visual, tactile, and kinesthetic perception.
60. • DI practitioners make instructional
decisions based on student readiness,
interests, and learning profile as well as on
content, process, and product.
67. What’s one piece of
technology you learned
today you can take back
to your classroom to
help a struggling reader?
68. Technology improves performance when
used in environments where
teachers, the school community, and
school and district administrators
support the use of technology.

I use this picture to remind the participants that we are all learning to use technology in new ways so we don ’ t have to be perfect... we just have to realistic... this is a great opportunity for us to try new things and fail as examples with our kids... let them help us... let them teach us... it also reminds them that everything we try today might not work just like in their classroom and that ’ s okay too...
Keyboard button- if you hold the button then it allows you to undock and merge the keyboard hold the cursor down to get the magnifying bubble Double tab the space bar and it puts in the period and the space Put 3 fingers on the space bar it puts in 3 spaces, put 4 fingers it puts in 4 spaces Spelling- hold word and it will offer replacements Copy/Paste Alternate languages/characters- are hidden- hold on the u and then slide your finger up to the one you want... same with the number toggle button
Scroll all the way over to the left- music control (circle with the arrow- will lock the rotation of your ipad) (audio button- can mute the entire ipad)
4 finger pinch- to close an app 4 fingers scroll up- shows your minimized apps 4 fingers swipe to the right or left switches between apps enlarge-pinch and open...
I just like to give them a quick fyi these are 2 free easy ways to shorten URL ’ s
This is one of the QR code creators I like so I share this with them...
Same thing.. this is my prefered QR code reader, so I give it to them as an FYI
No Internet explorer supported
This is a clip from SNL and one of the biggest problems is that are students aren ’ t clearly able to express their ideas through writing or explaining their ideas from things they have read... hopefully by using technology we can help them be better at communicating and expressing their ideas and thoughts regarding reading, in writing and in general...
As teachers begin to differentiate instruction, there are three main instructional elements that they can adjust to meet the needs of their learners: Content—the knowledge and skills students need to master Process—the activities students use to master the content Product—the method students use to demonstrate learning Differentiating instruction involves making changes to one or more of these elements. There is no prescribed way to differentiate instruction: The changes a teacher makes to each of the classroom elements depends on the needs of his or her students.
More than just a web-browser- talk about all the benefits of chrome over other browsers and the next slides show them how to search for chrome applications and chrome “ extensions ”
It ’ s a lot like an itunes or app store of it ’ s own... they can search from applications or extensions
Point out that under extensions they can search by categories but theres an accessiblity category right there!!!! If they have devices, this would be a great time to give them 5 minutes or so to just search around...
I want to specifically show them Readability... it cleans up pages as an extension and is very helpful for students who struggle with the content on the page- it ’ s too busy and distracting and they need a cleaner print of text... great resource for teachers... The extension shows up in the browser bar to easily be used...
First is a screen shot of a typical reading passage on a website with advertisements and a lot of visuals making it busy... the second is a screen shot of the same page once it has been cleaned up using the readability extension...
1. Technology improves student performance when the application directly supports the curriculum objectives being assessed. ” In other words, technology is most effective when integrated with curriculum content.
SAMR Model- visual/followed by slides with examples...
EXAMPLES of SAMR models Substitution » Augmentation » Modification » Redefinition Students use a word processor for their writing. Students can now easily edit and format their writing. Published work is now printed rather than handwritten. Students can save various drafts of their work. Students search the internet for information to support their persuasive topic. Augmentation Students improve their writing through the tools within the word processing program e.g. spelling, grammar check, thesaurus, word count. Images and graphics are easily embedded within the document. Students can email external sources for further information. Modification Teacher shifts the focus of some of the writing task to be collaborative. Students use an online collaborative space ( virtual classrooms – wiki) to write in small groups, conduct peer editing and feedback, and to comment on final products. Work can be done in class time, as well as out of class. Redifintion Teacher chooses to collaborate with other classes locally or globally on a common issue or problem, using web conferencing. Students research and share their findings within a virtual classroom, in order to find a common solution. The project uses the strengths of students from different classes. Students use a range of multimedia to collect, communicate and distribute their findings and conclusions. A range of technologies are seamlessly used to communicate and share information between the different school groups.
Graphic is linked to the site... in the graphic you see the ‘ watch video ’ link... go to the website and show them the demo... it ’ s a great resource.. probably better for older students but something we recommend they think about and play with... it is most likely going to be acquired in the next 6 months so membership is still currently free...
Technology helps us make connections with their reading to real life and make reading and writing more authentic...
Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest Pinterest: Pinterest is a free virtual bulletin board where users pin videos and images captured from around the web. These images are then arranged into different categories on a user's board. Pins are also shared and searchable making thus Pinterest a great tool for virtual learning. Pins are also visible to other Pinterest users and one can easily see the board of others as well.
3. “ Technology improves performance when the application adjusts for student ability and prior experience, and provides feedback to the student and teacher about student performance or progress with the application. ” This finding supports the differentiated instruction practices of coaching and mentoring as well as sharing responsibility for learning.
Read from a children ’ s book- the more imagery the better!
Then give them a draw response in infuse learning... give them a task to draw three things they remember from the story....

Popplet Great For: Making graphic organizers and thinking maps. Very simple to use and includes potential for collaboration. great for organizing ideas from reading or relating reading to real life or other text connections or organizing ideas for writing!!! So many uses!!! Content : This platform allows users to visualize connections between ideas and bits of information by organizing them into a graphic map. Anything from lesson-planning resources to student research can be turned into a Popplet. Design : The site is clean and simple, and it seems reasonable that the design of this beta version will change very little. After all, Popplet ’s entire purpose is providing a blank canvas and the tools to populate it. Review : Following a required free registration, the interface is simple to use. Creating “bubbles” that contain individual ideas is as simple as pointing and clicking, and connecting two bubbles is just as easy. The site’s media input tools are similar to those found on most Web sites—for example, the familiar “browse” button allows users to select images for upload. Example: Food chain Second Example: Use as student resource for outlining ideas/brainstorming
Popplet- examples of use
Basic screen shot of a document open in adobe
Screen shots walk them through the process but you might want to show them a live demo version...
Powerpoint template... I ’ ll include in the next slides
You might want to demo live for them... 1. take a screen shot of an individual question on worksheet, test or quiz, or a screen shot of an individual page 2. Record voice of orally reading question and answer- then student could use ipad to have oral admin...
Graphic is linked to text compactor if you want to do a live demo and then on the next slide there is a 6 minute tutorial video on using text compactor on an ipad THIS IS A GREAT TOOL FOR STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE WITH READING BUT ALSO TO TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO SUMMARIZE!
The graphic is linked to wikipedia ’ s mainpage so you can do a quick search and then show them this live...
This graphic is linked to google so you can show them a quick search using reading level tools..
Graphic is linked to webpage- but I haven ’ t actually used this one... so you might just want to show it and explain it ’ s something they may want to try....
Again, graphic is linked to a webpage so this might be something to quickly show them at the end or mention to them without going to the site as something they might want to try...
4. “ Technology improves performance when the application is integrated into the typical instructional day. ” This finding supports classroom and content learning with technology as opposed to lab learning with technology.
Slide is linked to the website... once you get on the website I would show them the 30 second demo video on the home page.. if it ’ s not working you can go to the browse tab and then show them one from there... I would have a photo ready to show them a live demo of it... it ’ s super easy... I always use a photo of one of my dogs... there are a ton of classroom applications- kids of all ages love it.. some kids that wont write will write a script if they get to “ blabberize ” it... it engages kids for instructions... they might listen to short passages if they have been read to them from a blabberize, etc...
We can use technology to help make reading positive and fun and create positive emotions for students.. far more than just a reading program...
Demo of puppet pals- it will talk through most of the uses and why I would recommend it... just in case your not familiar or don ’ t have it on your ipad to show them...
Padlet-linked to example with demo video- great for kids sharing ideas and collaborating on something they ’ ve read or are writing. We give you a blank wall. You put anything you want on it, anywhere. Simple, yet powerful.
If you have time and want create a padlet wall for the training and have them post on the wall what they learned that they will take back with them...
6. “ Technology improves performance when used in environments where teachers, the school community, and school and district administrators support the use of technology. ” In addition to performance improvements tied to administrative support for technology, findings show that integration of technology with instruction, professional development for teachers, and computer use at home and school with differentiated products and student entry points combine to improve performance.
