3. Methodology
Study conducted among a sample of 3,500 people residing in Europe. The interviews were
conducted by telephone, at the home of the people questioned, between February 14 and
March 28 2011.
Number of interviews per country:
France: 500
UK: 500
Germany : 500
Spain : 500
Italy: 500
Belgium: 500
Austria : 500
Nationally representative samples of each country’s population, aged 18 years and over, put
together using the quota method (gender, age, profession of head of household). Questioning
conducted on the basis of contact lists taken randomly from telephone directories, after
stratification by region and by size of agglomeration.
This report was put together in observance of the ISO 20252 norms “Market research, social and opinion
studies”
(Aswith any quantitative study, this study presents findings subject to the error margins inherent in statistical

8. N.B.…
After two subdued years and despite a drab economic context in Western Europe,
holiday plans for summer 2011 for all Europeans are on the rise again and back
to the high levels of 2007.
A return to the pre-crisis period? Not exactly
A structural alteration: multiple holidays are progressing the most,
testifying to a disruption of the way in which Europeans organise their
holidays.
Major geographic disparities:
Holiday plans among the Italians and Spaniards are on the increase.
On the other hand, in the UK and Belgium, multiple holidays over the
summer have not managed to recover, and as a result holiday plans have
not evolved.
Moreover, the holiday plans of the French, which are stable compared to
2010, are still not back to their pre-crisis level.

11. N.B…
2-week stays are still favoured but their proportion is going down.
In France, the UK and Spain, only one-week stays are regaining ground
this year.
In Italy, the increase in the frequency of summer holidays in 2011 is
having an effect on the duration of stays: the significant drop in 2-week
stays is working to the advantage of short stays.

20. N.B…
The unavoidable criteria for Europeans are still budget and climate along
with the quality of tourist offerings (activities, infrastructures).
But Europeans have been marked by the current events of the past winter
and this spring, and particularly by the political movements in North Africa
and the Middle East. Within this context, the risk issue is in the forefront of
choice factors.
Note that all the risks are taken into account, whether for terrorist attacks,
social unrest or health risks.

25. N.B…
Europeans plan to spend a bit more in total this summer for their holiday
This average increase is the result of divergent changes between:
Countries whose budget has remained within a fairly stable range
over the past five years: France and Spain
A country that has been dropping structurally for several years: the
UK
And two countries with very heavy post-crisis increases: Germany
and Belgium

IV – What prospects for summer 2011?
In terms of purpose, Europeans are still massively focused on rest, and less on
discovery. The postcard image of rest “at the seaside” is still the dream of the
vast majority of European holidaymakers.
Europe remains the destination favoured by Europeans, national tourism also has
the wind in its sails in France Spain and Italy. The persistent tendency to follow
the sun should be underlined.
