Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Data is growing at a phenomenal rateData must be recoverable, fasterBackup and recovery spending usually not high priority, everyone trying to save money here, but with higher data growth and greater expectations with respect to SLAs, that’s difficult to do
  2. Some statistics from a recent IT studyYou see three numbers here: 97, 54, $43M - 97% of IT professionals felt their data was anywhere from slightly to highly vulnerable – potentially to some sort of data breach or backup incident or security incident, or other type of outage- When asked what is your top backup and recovery challenge, 54% of the IT pros said they were challenged by long backup windows
  3. So clearly there exists a backup and recovery problem for many organizations today. Why is that?Think about it: if your backupenv’t looks something like this, over the last 10 years or so you started backing up your various application servers – Exchange, e-mail, databases – to tape, or to disk in front of a tape library. So tape is somewhere within your backup process. You’ve got all your file servers and e-mail servers and database servers that need to be backed up, and many of these are virtualized now, but tape is still in that process, then you’re going to run into a problem.
  4. And the problems you’re going to run into look like this. - backups are typically going to be slower when you’re backing up to tape - you’re going to have longer restore and recovery times - tape fails, for various reasons, and increases management costs - increase in virtual servers leads to greater server proliferation, and many of the utilities used to back up virtual servers don’t back up to tape in the first place
  5. According to Gartner, Symantec is the #1 in backup and recovery market share worldwide. Our market share is nearly that of the next 3 competitors combined. For decades, Symantec NetBackup has been protecting some of the largest, global enterprise customers on the planet. These relationships give us a unique opportunity to gain a keen insight and understanding into their needs and emerging trends and to deliver enterprise class solutions that meet those needs. We wouldn’t be the largest provider of backup and recovery solutions if our many customers and many awards didn’t say things like… NetBackup… it’s easy to use and just plain works.
  6. Symantec is known for its deep technology base and its legacy understanding of files and file systems with a long history of patents supporting our path to leadership. This long standing capability gives us the unique ability to ‘see’ into the backup data stream and understand what the application is and what the data format looks like. This level of “intelligence” allows us to select “on-the-fly” deduplication algorithms that: Give NetBackup the unique ability to perform a true “Single-Pass” Backup and Recovery of both Images and Files (Granular Recovery Technology – GRT, see below) Intelligent Deduplication  Optimize deduplication rates for a specific application and data set  requiring less ‘brute-force’ computing power, lower cost Reduces the need for computational resources for greener and more environmentally friendly (deduplication is computationally intensive) Provides a deduplication platform or roadmap that can be enhanced and fine tuned over time as data types and applications change. On the other hand, other dedupe vendors (such as EMC) use a “variable window” approach because they ‘can’t see’ what the data stream looks like is so they resort to varying the block size and then “guess” at what the optimum dedupe might be. This is computationally intensive, requires significantly more power to prevent performance bottlenecks, and does not offer a path to improved data deduplication rates and capabilities in the future. In addition to better, lower cost deduplication NetBackup offers faster backup and restore across virtual and physical environments:What We Can Do – “Single-Pass” Backup  VMDK or physical image or incremental backup “Single-Step” Recovery  Full application recovery from ‘image’ backup, and/or “Single-Step” Recovery  File level (or granular) recovery from ‘image’ backup Because we can ‘see the files’ in the image backup and restore directly from backup. No need to remount backup and restore file(s). No additional time or disk space required for file level restore File restores are the highest % of restore requirements
  7. Let’s take a quick look at the state of virtualization in the typical enterprise and the need to move towards protecting those environments with more robust, enterprise class, cross silo capable solutions to manage the many facets impacted by exploding data growth. The Next 1/3 and Last 1/3: The path to virtualization from here on out will be all about the Enterprise. The ability to protect and ensure the availability of current and new business-critical applications.Adoption of virtualization is wide-spread with adopters seeing many benefits. In fact, its becoming more common in many organization today to have a mandate that ALL new applications must be virtualized or have a very good reason and justification why it can’t.First 1/3: This part of the virtualization journey for most IT organizations is done. These are the Tier-3 apps that are the easy less critical applications, where if they fail can cause disruptions, but are not critical enough to cause serious or long reaching harm to a business and no one will lose their job. As a result, many of these environments are being protected by VM only focused point solutions and are not well integrated, if at all, into an overall Enterprise-class data protection strategy. Interestingly, while many are using these low-cost point solutions to protect their VM environments, many still have large deployments of physical servers being protected by more traditional, Enterprise-class data protection solutions like NetBackup.Next 1/3:Here’s where many organization are today. They are in the process virtualizing their Tier-2 apps which would have a direct impact on a Line of Business and if a failure occurred, could cause a serious impact to operations and most likely a loss of revenue to the business. As they progress down the path of completing the “Next Third”, two critical needs will arise:Tier-2 apps will have more demanding needs to meet SLA driven RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective) requirements to reduce the risk of loss or failure. Simply said: They will need to backup faster and recover faster. In order to manage accelerating data growth, deduplication will be a mandatory, foundational component in the management of the risk and cost of data protection. With out deduplication, it may become impossible to manage backup windows, contain storage costs, and be cost prohibitive to replicate data to one or more remote Disaster Recovery (DR) site(s). For those organizations that are not planning on integrating and managing all data protection, virtual and physical, on a single, Enterprise-class platform, NOW would be the time to revisit that plan.Last 1/3:This is going to be the tough one. Virtualizing Tier-1 apps representing the life blood of a business. Failure of an application at this level could result in massive losses in revenue and profits, even the eventual failure of the company. Inexpensive VM data protection point solutions not up to the task can place the organization at great risk. At this level where an application just can’t fail, data protection should be in a proven, enterprise-class solution that offers:1. The ability to manage entire, globally deployed, virtual and physical server environments, ALL from a single console.Fully integrated deduplication within the backup infrastructure with the flexibility to easily manage deployment to optimize performance while reducing storage costs and ensuring a responsive, yet cost effective DR solution.Enterprise-Class Deduplication will be a critical foundation for any virtualized data center:Management and protection of the explosive data growth caused by virtualization. Without an Enterprise-class, comprehensive data deduplication solution as an integral part of your IT infrastructure, the data protection challenges for fully deployed virtualization across all applications within the Enterprise could become unmanageable and potentially insurmountable. We will be talking further about the about the broad deployment flexibility and support with NetBackup 7 for deduplication across the Enterprise and as a foundation for managing data growth.
  8. Customers today are facing many challenges as they transform and modernize their data centers. Virtualization is driving down server costs and making their business more nimble by making it easy to add new applications. Conversely, virtualization is driving a data explosion. The simplicity of adding more applications that generate more data is driving up storage costs and complexity. Enterprise data no longer sits in a data center, but is generated and stored globally, and needs to be protected and consolidated. In the face of all this change, budgets are tight, with continued pressure to get more with less, along with discovery and compliance regulations are forcing longer retention periods and faster discovery response mandates to avoid penalties. At Symantec, we see 4 key trends that are a focus priorities for our customers: We call it our COST model. These are our focus priorities as well.Capital Expense or Capex: How do I spend less, on what is essentially an insurance policy? This is the hard cost of deploying the IT infrastructure. New technologies have significantly helped to reduce or better utilize these costs such as virtualization and deduplication. Capex is a little easier to manage and control given the availability of faster, better, cheaper solutions, but there is still a high cost associated with capex and the constant pressure to drive more with less.Operating Expense or Opex: How do I do more, with less? This is the cost of what it takes to run the IT infrastructure and a big part of this cost is associated with the human element. In the words of many of our largest enterprise customers, “Opex is killing us”. The growing complexity of data centers, in part due to the usage of multi-vendor point solutions, requires skills, training, and expertise across many solutions. In order to try and control these costs, many organizations are turning to lower cost, and in some cases less experienced personnel to manage these complex and critical environments which creates another problem, increased risk.Service Levels or SLAs: How do I protect more and more critical data and applications that require tighter SLAs? Data growth has obliterated the backup window. Thousands of virtual applications create a scheduling nightmare. Customers are trying to figure out how to backup and recover 10s of millions of files in backup windows that no longer exist. Constantly evolving compliance regulations are forcing tighter recovery SLAs and requirements for more comprehensive disaster recovery solutions. Any of these areas can impact the Capex, Opex, and transformation of your IT environment with the growing need to be able to offset costs against the organization or department consuming resourcing.Transformation: How do I deal with the current trends rolling through IT? Virtualization is transforming the way we create and manage information. It is also a path. Not a process that happens overnight. Take the wrong path, and the process can become challenging and expensive. The Cloud, whether private or public, now or in the future, are offering new ways to reduce both Capex and Opex, provide faster time to market for new services and competitive advantage. Discovery – Whether, driven by legal, compliance, regulations, the need to retain and manage only data you need to control cost and reduce risk, or simply improve recovery SLAs, with the fantastic growth in data, how do you transform your IT infrastructure to find data fast, get access to it, and use it. While reducing cost.At Symantec, we have these customer priorities set squarely in our sights, let’s take a look at how NetBackup is innovating backup and recovery to address these real COST problems.
  9. The NetBackup platform can help you manage growth and cost, improve backup and recovery SLA, and consolidate and manage your entire global data protection strategy into a single, unified enterprise-calls tool, from one vendor. Symantec.
  10. NetBackup is the global leader in backup and recovery solutions and with its broad and deep technology and experience, Symantec has the ability to innovate solutions to solve customers problems… that work. For decades NetBackup has met the demands of IT professionals to better protect their datacenters as new technologies have driven transformation and change. Not only has NetBackup been there to protect the largest of global enterprise environments, but has won countless awards for data protection, and to paraphrase what judges and customers alike have said, “Netbackup is easy to use, and always works.” Nice things to say about a product that really needs to work when the chips are down.NetBackup is about both Backup and Recovery. Some products backup really fast, but restore really slow. Others find themselves doing it the other way around. NetBackup is designed for both. Backup and Recovery SLAs are getting tighter and tighter. With NetBackup’s broad capabilities you have the flexibility to design and deploy a data protection strategy for backup and recovery requirements across every type of source workload, across the entire global deployment.Keeping in mind that data protection is one of those life insurance policies you don’t want to be without, but don’t want to spend a fortune either, NetBackup is continually innovating to protect better, recovery faster, while reducing both costs and risk. NetBackup let’s you Deploy the right technology for the right workload and avoid becoming a systems integrator.Capital Expense or Capex: How do I spend less, and get more on what is essentially an insurance policy?Dedupe Everywhere – NetBackup offered the industry’s first “end-to-end” deduplication solution fully integrated into backup software. First available in NetBackup 7, released 2 years ago, customers have had the flexibility to deploy industry leading deduplication at the client or source, at the media server, or at a target deduplication appliance with the simplicity of a click of the mouse. Reducing the volume of data backed up across the network and stored can represent significant savings and potential deferred expenditures in Capex costs.Appliances / Cloud – Fully integrated deduplication and backup appliances are revolutionizing data protection. The integration, scalability , and affordability of the family of NetBackup appliances mean faster deployment, simple integration, and future-proof scalability. Representing significant Capex and Opex savings as well. Cloud storage is emerging. It represents a means to control, and potentially replace both Capex and Opex costs with a more manageable variable cost model for protecting data. Appliances and Cloud get you out of the systems integration business, and into the business of creating value for your business.NetBackup Accelerator – New in NetBackup 7.5, NetBackup Accelerator will revolutionize the speed of backup at the source. It’s unique integrated change tracking and source deduplication means that a full backup can happen in the time it takes to do an incremental backup. Backup optimized at the source means faster backup, and reduced network bandwidth and storage costs. Another way to manage Capex, spend less, and get more… while improving Backup and Recovery SLA performance.Operating Expense or Opex: While Capex is tough enough to manage, enterprise customers are telling us that it’s the“Opex that’s killing them...”OpCenter Global Management – NetBackup has been in the business of protecting globally deployed enterprise organizations for a very long time. NetBackup Platform and OpsCenter lets you manage your entire global backup and recovery environment from a single, unified data protection console. Eliminating the need for silo targeted, multiple point solutions, unified backup and recovery management can significantly reduce risk and Opex costs.Search, Hold, and Restore – NetBackup has 2 exciting new features for OPEX reduction in NetBackup 7.5. Backups do little to help in a disaster major or minor, local or remote, if you can’t find the data quickly, you can’t restore it quickly. The longer it takes to restore, the more it costs. Nearly 80% of restore requests are for files. New in NetBackup 7.5, Operational Restore dramatically simplifies the search across the entire enterprise for fast file level restores with a self-help recovery portal for IT.eDiscovery and Compliance requirements and requests create huge costs for IT in terms of the manpower to find data and the retention of data. Many organizations (xx% according to latest flash poll) actually place ALL their data on infinite retention to make sure they don’t delete something they should. The cost and risk associated with this kind of strategy can be enormous. New in NetBackup 7.5 is NetBackup Search. Upon a legal or compliance request, customer’s can now easily and quickly search across the entire backup infrastructure (tape, disk, cloud, where ever) to find that relevant data. It’s now possible to identify where relevant data is stored and place it on hold and that data that is no longer required, delete it. Imagine the cost savings in manpower, recovered storage, and the reduced risk associated with data that could have legal or compliance implications and should have been deleted a long time ago.Snapshot Management – Array based snapshots are becoming a critical part of the data protection strategy for many enterprises. The challenge has been how to manage snapshots and the rest of the backup infrastructure efficiently and economically. New in NetBackup 7.5 is Replication Director. Working closely with NetApp, a leader in snapshot technology, to develop the next generation of Symantec’s popular OpenStorage Interface (OST), the entire lifecycle of snapshots can be managed and recovered from within NetBackup. Backup and Snapshot replication can now be managed from a single admin console. Better backups, faster recovery. Reduce cost and risk.Cloud storage – Cloud storage is an emerging tool for data protection. It has the potential to significantly reduce Opex and Capex costs. In NetBackup 7.5, Symantec has expanded the number of cloud storage vendors to provide more choice and options.Service Levels or SLAs: How do I protect more and more critical data and applications that require tighter SLAs? Service levels for data protection come in two basic flavors: 1) Backup SLA – How fast can I backup up my data and… at what cost? 2) Recovery SLA – How fast can I restore my applications or data because I’m dead in the water and… at what cost? In many cases, NetBackup finds ways to do both…NetBackup Accelerator – New in NetBackup 7.5, NetBackup Accelerator with its uniquely integrated change tracking and source deduplication not only provide better ways to manage and reduce Capex costs, it can offer huge improvements in Backup and Recovery SLA performance. With NetBackup Accelerator full backups can happen in virtually the time it takes to do an incremental backup and restore the data at the speed and cost of a full backup. In some cases you will see backups happen up to 100x faster, and for remote offices tests have indicated up to 600X faster performance. Fast, cost effective, consolidated global data protection becomes a reality.Replication Director – Not only can Replication Director simplify and reduce the OPEX cost of the management and backup of snapshot replication, because these snapshots are now managed with in NetBackup, and leverage NetBackup’s granular recovery and search technologies, you can significantly improve Recovery SLAs with faster, searchable, file level recovery from any replicated snapshot, anywhere in the backup environment.Broader Disaster Recovery (DR) coverage – NetBackup Auto Image Replication or AIR – Available in NetBackup 7.1, allows NetBackup users can improve Recovery SLAs and reduce both Capex and Opex costs. Automating the backup and recovery process and leveraging deduplication to efficiently duplicate data to a remote site, data replication is seamless, transparent and cost effective, failover is fast, and leverage existing secondary site resources can eliminate the need for costly, dedicated disaster recovery sites.Expanded Cloud service offerings give customers more choice for remote backup to protect data. Cloud storage can reduce Capex costs and provide fast access to data in the event of a minor or major disaster.Transformation: How do I deal with the current trends rolling through IT? Virtualization Automation – Virtualization is transforming the way we create and manage information. Without automating the protection of virtualized applications and data, the possibility increases that applications and data may go unprotected. The Cloud, whether private or public, now or in the future, are offering new ways to reduce both Capex and Opex, provide faster time to market for new services and competitive advantage. eDiscovery – Whether driven by legal, compliance, or the growing number of regulations, coupled with the fantastic growth in data, the need to quickly search, find, retain and manage only that data you need is critical. Failure to respond quickly to ediscovery requests leaves your company exposed to fines and sanctions. Failure to hold relevant case data until resolved leaves the company exposed as well. Failure to delete data that should have been deleted, or keeping all backup data on infinite retention leaves the company at risk and while incurring significant costs. NetBackup Search and Operational Restore can help meet these challenges as you transform your data centers to accelerate ediscovery, fight infinite retention, reduce and control costs, reduce risk, or simply improve recovery SLAs.
  11. Single controller: all of the elements needed are in the single controller unit; add shelves for more capacity; driving more and more data thru static amount of cpu, memory, and bandwidth. Means one of two things: either outgrow your backup window, or overprovision and overpay the amount of cpu, memory, and bandwidth needed up front.Grid-based: all of the elements needed to maintain performance are on each node in the grid; as your data grows, you don’t just add disk, you add cpu, memory, and bandwidth as well. This allows you to pay as you grow, and maintain backup performance over time. In addition, with ExaGrid’s grid-based architecture, capacity is virtualized across all of the nodes, so that if your grid is nearing capacity, and you add a new node, the system will load balance itself
  12. The other aspect of ExaGrid’s grid based system and its ability to scale is that you can avoid what we call forklift upgrades. A forklift upgrade occurs when, in a single controller system, you outgrow the power of the single controller. When this happens you need to bring in a whole new controller and migrate your data to the new system. (Or face data “silos”).
  13. If you want to dramatically reduce or even eliminate your reliance on tape, you can do this by installing an off-site ExaGrid system:The way it works is pretty simple. You’re backing up your data to disk at your primary location, and ExaGrid is deduplicating that data to dramatically save on the amount of disk required to store all of the data. The ExaGrid system is then sending just that deduplicated data over your wide area network to your offsite location. The end result is that the offsite location now has an exact replica or copy of all of your backup data, ready for disk-based restore in the event of a disaster. In addition, ExaGrid provides an “Instant DR” feature which optimizes your most recent backup on the remote site so that it too can be restored as quickly as possible.
  14. Purpose: create off-site copies of mission critical backups to protect against site loss – better offsite data protectionThis is done by allowing OST optimized duplication of images across sites thru the use of NetBackup Storage Lifecycle policies. Prior to AIR, this process was limited to replication between devices under NetBackup control via a common NetBackup master server (in other words, both the original site and the target site were under the same NetBackup master domains). AIR facilitates replication between NetBackup master domains, and so ExaGrid support for NetBackup AIR is intended to allow ExaGrid replication of NetBackup backup data such that off-site copies of backups can be created across different NetBackup master domains, thru the use of OST optimized duplication. How it works:1. A NetBackup backup is written to the ExaGrid at the primary site (copy 1), and is duplicated to the target domain via OST duplication and ExaGrid replication, over a WAN, generating (copy 2). 2. The ExaGrid in the target domain at the secondary site alerts the target master server that a backup has been duplicated to it, which triggers an update of the target domain’s catalog.
  15. Optimized synthetics with OST allow for shorter backup windowsConcept of synthesizing full backups from previous full and new incremental backups is not new – basically you’re reconstructing a full backup from a prior full plus some number of more recent incremental backups. Traditionally this was done by reading the previous full and the incrementals from storage and creating a new backup stream that gets written back to storage – removing processing from the client but generating additional overhead on the backup server, as well as more i/o with the reading of old images and writing of new. With NetBackup optimized synthetics, think of a backup as a collection of unique deduplicated data segments; a synthetic backup is created by generating a new collection of pointers to data segments from the prior full backup plus the newer incrementals. The media server is not reading or writing any of these data segments – it’s simply rearranging the pointers or references to them. The result is a synthetic backup that was created w/o using the resources from the client, backup server, or network, enabling super fast full backups w/o storage I/O as a bottleneck for your SLA!
