"There are many ways to be creative with data! This talk will describe how Asterank was built and include details on the backend data analysis and the frontend visualizations. It will also describe the challenges I faced, how I provided value to NASA and private space companies, and how Asterank was ultimately acquired by Planetary Resources.
I’ll also go into some details on Asterank Discover, an app that crowdsources the search for asteroids across terabytes of imagery and has found hundreds of potential new asteroids.
Asterank started as just a data project in an area I thought was interesting. I didn’t expect to wind up actually building spacecraft. My experience is a great example of how engineers can use their data visualization skills to disrupt industries that have been stagnant for a long time. My talk will give an inspiring real-world narrative of how a data-minded engineer can make a big impact in areas they’re passionate about.

asteroids classified by the kinds of materials in them - we know that
PGMs are over 100x more abundant in asteroids than on Earth
wanted to apply my interest in computer science to difficult problems in space

with over half a million known asteroids, a question like “which is the most valuable to mine,”
or even a general space exploration question like which one is the easiest to get to, or which large one will come close
to earth next, is not always easy to answer.
set out to find a way to bring all the knowledge we have on asteroids and put it under one roof
...and this project is called Asterank. It’s a tool that lets people ask questions about space and get answers.
Asterank gives companies like PR, DSI the the info & calculations they need to go out and mine these asteroids.
(Asterank lets companies like PR, DSI determine which asteroids are worth exploring and why)
Asterank a resource for the public to understand and share in asteroids. empower... science education
end result is an organized response to a scientific question
these are the most cost effective asteroids at today’s market value.
numbers are theoretical maximum based on current economic valuation
chock full of asteroids! smile
sky surveys now use computer algos, but they miss things that humans often catch.
engage public - science, NASA being defunded. put space advancement in the hands of the people
so anyone can participate, no longer at whim of government funding.

- making rocket science accessible - making things exciting, accessible to people
- software - guiding where we should go and why. It helps us discover asteroids
- humanity is capable of greatness. we can spread into space and settle the universe.
but we can’t do it without people like you
