2. AGROECOLOGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE CONTEXT OF SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES
 Use of modern technology in ( industrial)
agriculture, forestry and fisheries exacerbates
the impacts of climate change and impacts the
lives of fishers.
 Industrial agriculture and industrial overfishing
plays a crucial part in the loss of biodiversity and
environmental degradation and therefore must
be addressed through AGROECOLOGY.

Promoting the agro-ecological approach: Acting in
compliance with nature
 Climate Friendly Impact: Agro-ecological practices
entail sustainable natural resource use, increased
resilience, and climate change adaptation.
 Agro-ecology contains the diversity of small-scale
producers all over the world, including small-scale
fishers.
 Small-scale fishers live in co-existence and operate in
harmony with nature, employing more sustainable and
traditional fishing practices.

4. AGROECOLOGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE CONTEXT OF SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES…
Promoting the agro-ecological approach: SSF Cutting out
the food miles: sustainable practices
 Small-scale fishers catch more fish per gallon of fuel than
industrial fishing fleets, they also discard less fish
 Fish is for local consumption and trade, emissions
caused by transportation are reduced
 Small-scale fishing practices is a political project aimed
at transforming structures of power in society for the
better of both people, the environment and climate

5. Promoting the agro-ecological approach: Food sovereignty and social
benefits
 Like SSF Agroecological practises bring about increased food security,
jobs, local development etc
 Local commercialization and healthy diets for coastal communities is
part of a food sovereignty agenda.
 Fish from common-pool resources are widely traded in local markets
and contribute in large part to the nutritional security of local
populations all over the world.

6. Promoting the agro-ecological approach: Focus on
what works: control over the food system to the food
producers
 Small-scale fishers contribute to half of the fish
consumed by humans globally ; small-scale farmers
are responsible for producing 70% of the world’s
food needs
 The control of seeds, biodiversity, waters, oceans,
and land should therefore be in the hands of the
people who feed the world.
