2. FIBIC – a sustainable future
Finnish Bioeconomy Cluster FIBIC combines research and
companies for innovative solutions. We believe in a more in-
novative, resource-efficient and competitive society built on
the sustainable use of renewable materials and resources for
industrial and customer purposes. We are accelerating Fin-
land to become a pioneer in sustainable development and
bioeconomy.
Towards bioeconomy
FIBIC has evolved from Forestcluster Ltd, which was founded
in 2007 by key forest cluster companies and major research
institutes and universities. The task for Forestcluster Ltd was
to implement industry-driven research programs, aiming at
renewing the cluster. A bio-based economy was found to be
one of the most potential routes for renewal and was put in
the center for future activities.
The bio-based economy also includes sources of biomass
other than forest-based ones and other industrial sectors in
order to enable the development of efficient and integrated
concepts. The transition to a bio-based economy needs even
FIBIC is one of six Strategic Centers for science, technology and innovation in Finland
(SHOK), which turn science and technology into sustainable bio-based solutions. We
offer businesses and research organizations a new way of engaging in close, long-term
cooperation and leveraging the best competences and resources.
wider knowledge, new competences and a new kind of scien-
tific research. Even the most radical new products, new pro-
cesses and service solutions are possible through research.
New innovations through research
programs
Research programs are the core FIBIC’s activities. The inter-
action between end-users, companies and researchers cre-
ates opportunities through open innovation and new ways
of networking. We also identify new lines of research and re-
search fields. Research programs include, amongst others,
companies in the fields of forest cluster and bioeconomy, re-
search organizations and universities. The programs form an
efficient platform for international cooperation.
With its research and innovation programs, FIBIC aims to
create the most innovative development environment within
the bio-based economy. Today, we have activities in three
different strategic focus areas: Forward Customer Solutions;
Intelligent, Resource-efficient Production Technologies and
Future Biorefinery. Our on-going research programs are re-
3. lated to the development of intelligent and resource-efficient
processes, future biorefineries and bioenergy solutions.
The core of the FIBIC research activity is that a sustainable
economy requires a bioeconomy based on the sustainable
use of renewable raw materials. The future bioeconomy will
widen and diversify forest-based products and also benefit
sources of biomass other than forest-based ones.
The programs are an open platform for companies, re-
search institutes and universities. We make possibilities real-
ity. Join us!
