Abstract
Today, organizations compete on capabilities. However capabilities are not the atomic unit of
work in any organization. They tend to be abstract and require resources and processes. Thus
developing resources and suitable processes is inexorable for any organization. Indeed, as the
proponents of resource-based view claim, process itself is a key resource for any organization.
With this logic in place, it is not too difficult to comprehend the rationale for organizations’ all
pervasive efforts to initially re-engineer and now manage business processes leading sometimes
to creation of new processes. In the proposed project, we amalgamate this view with the
emergent open innovation approach which states that most critical resources for an organization
can also be accessed from outside its boundaries only if an organization is willing to make its
boundaries porous enough. Thus, the central tenet of this project is to examine how an
organization can become more agile and develop new competencies by opening its processes to
outside world of stakeholders and even sometimes to general public. The project will also
examine the challenges an organization would face in undertaking such endeavor. The study is
expected to come up with a generic framework depicting key components of any Open Business
Process Innovation exercise.
