“People don’t
care how much
you know until
they know how
much you care”
	 — Theodore Roosevelt
HISTORYFPSC spearheaded the
first Financial Planning
Week (FPW) in 2009.
The week was created to raise
awareness of the need for
financial planning and included
a call to action to industry to
collaborate and enact
meaningful change for the
benefit of Canadians.
THE OBJECTIVE OF FPW IS TO:
Raise awareness of the importance of financial planning and provoke
a call to action to all stakeholders for the benefit of all Canadians;
Encourage industry to promote the value of financial planning
to their clients;
Provide a platform for financial planning professionals to discuss
the necessity and progress of a financial planning profession;
Encourage consumers to take positive ‘planning’ action;
Promote the benefits of financial planning to Canadians,
other planners, financial services providers and regulators;
Promote the value of the CFP designation to the industry and public.
Canadians must be able to trust financial planners to help them
achieve financial well-being. Placing their confidence and faith in
their planner means not only expecting exceptional technical
competence from a CFP professional, but also unquestionable
honesty, integrity, loyalty and respect – factors that are central
in all relationships.
While arguably one of the most valuable commodities available
to CFP professionals, many of us assume trust rather than
consciously building, nurturing and protecting it.
This year’s CFP Professional Symposium will offer you an
opportunity to explore this important topic with colleagues
and experts while providing practical tools that you can put
to use immediately.
Trust is the bedrock for building
strong, sustainable relationships.
THIS
YEAR’S
THEME
EXPOSURE
AND REACH
GREATER CONSUMER EXPOSURE FOR YOUR BRAND:
In November, national television advertising reaching over 6 million
Canadians will drive traffic to fpsc.ca, where your logo is showcased.
Your logo appears in the Financial Planning Week special section in
The Globe and Mail, read by 1.4 million people across Canada.
And will live on after the event until the end of February through the
Globe’s digital publication, with content pushed out to online and
traditional media influencers across the country.
Your logo appears in an Investment Executive advertisement reaching
over 42,000 readers across the country.
PROMINENCE IN THE EYES OF CANADA’S
FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY:
Your brand is featured in all pre- and post-event communications to
over 17,000 CFP professionals and other industry stakeholders.
Your logo is published in an article in the FP Standard, which
reaches 70,000 through inclusion in Investment Executive and
other distribution channels.
ACCESS TO CANADA’S ELITE FINANCIAL PLANNERS
AND INDUSTRY DECISION MAKERS:
Connect, recruit and build your brand at what is anticipated to be a sold
out event. 450 attendees are expected for the 2015 Symposiums.
This year we’ve expanded your reach by hosting two CFP Professional
Symposiums (one in Toronto and one in Vancouver).
Give your brand prominence during this year’s Financial
Planning Week. This is your opportunity as an industry leader
to reach the consumers, CFP professionals, students,
educators, regulators, government representatives, and
media who are invited to play a role in FPW.
Through a comprehensive campaign in targeted media,
you can expand your reach to over 8 million Canadians.
Get behind this important event and highlight your
leadership in this space.
Many participate in
Financial Planning Week.
Industry leaders sponsor it.

For generations, marketing has been hypocritical. We’ve been taught to
market to others in ways we hate being marketed to (cold-calling, flyers,
ads, etc.). So why do we still keep trying the same stale marketing moves?
Scott Stratten shows you how to unlearn the old ways and consistently
attract and engage the right customers. You’ll stop just pushing out your
message and praying that it sticks somewhere. Potential and current
customers want to be listened to, validated, and have a platform to be
heard — especially online.
Stratten coaches you on how to cultivate a strong relationship with your
customers and make yourself the logical choice for their needs.
He shows how to create a mindset and systems to roll out a new, 21st
century marketing approach. He focuses on a Pull & Stay method (pulling
your market towards you and staying/engaging with them, leading them to
naturally choose you for their needs) rather than Push & Pray.
He defines marketing as all points of engagement between a company
and its customers, not just a single boxed-in activity. Traditional marketing
methods are leading to diminishing returns and disaffected customers,
says Stratten. The answer? Stop marketing, start UnMarketing!

and programming.
This year’s Symposium – held in both Toronto and Vancouver –
explores the theme of “Trust Matters”, with sessions sure
to attract and engage Canada’s elite financial planners and

Why Good Clients Ignore
Great Advice — Overcoming
the Implementation Impasse
DR. MOIRA SOMERS
The human brain is one of the most amazing, elegant,
vulnerable, and error-prone things in the universe. Add
money to the mix, and things really get interesting! That’s
where Dr. Moira Somers works — at the intersection of
money and mind.
Dr. Somers is a clinical neuropsychologist, professor and
financial recovery expert. She is on the faculty with the
Sudden Money Institute, where she trains advisors (many
of whom are CFP professionals) on the psychological
factors at play during major life transitions.
She will be tackling some of the difficult questions
that many professional planners face on a day-to-day
basis. Why is it so hard for people to change, even when
they really want to? How do feelings and beliefs hinder
or help that change, particularly when it comes to
the domain of money? What can be done to enhance
successful outcomes?
TOPIC:
Issues with Trusts
JOHN POYSER
John Poyser is a partner with the law firm Tradition
Law LLP, Estates and Trusts in Winnipeg. He is also

British Columbia pass wealth from one generation to
the next while minimizing taxes and structuring special
arrangements to improve the lives of beneficiaries.
A seasoned author and presenter, John will be tackling
some of the difficult Trust and Estate situations that
financial planners may face in this era of an aging
population and prevalence of persons with special needs.

  • 3. HISTORYFPSC spearheaded the first Financial Planning Week (FPW) in 2009. The week was created to raise awareness of the need for financial planning and included a call to action to industry to collaborate and enact meaningful change for the benefit of Canadians. THE OBJECTIVE OF FPW IS TO: Raise awareness of the importance of financial planning and provoke a call to action to all stakeholders for the benefit of all Canadians; Encourage industry to promote the value of financial planning to their clients; Provide a platform for financial planning professionals to discuss the necessity and progress of a financial planning profession; Encourage consumers to take positive ‘planning’ action; Promote the benefits of financial planning to Canadians, other planners, financial services providers and regulators; Promote the value of the CFP designation to the industry and public.
  • 4. Canadians must be able to trust financial planners to help them achieve financial well-being. Placing their confidence and faith in their planner means not only expecting exceptional technical competence from a CFP professional, but also unquestionable honesty, integrity, loyalty and respect – factors that are central in all relationships. While arguably one of the most valuable commodities available to CFP professionals, many of us assume trust rather than consciously building, nurturing and protecting it. This year’s CFP Professional Symposium will offer you an opportunity to explore this important topic with colleagues and experts while providing practical tools that you can put to use immediately. Trust is the bedrock for building strong, sustainable relationships. THIS YEAR’S THEME

Toronto | November 18, 2015 @ 8:30 am – 4:00 pm Vancouver | November 20, 2015 @ 8:30 am – 4:00 pm CFP Professional Symposium SPONSORSHIP KEYNOTE SPONSOR $50,000 | Both Cities For generations, marketing has been hypocritical. We’ve been taught to market to others in ways we hate being marketed to (cold-calling, flyers, ads, etc.). So why do we still keep trying the same stale marketing moves? Scott Stratten shows you how to unlearn the old ways and consistently attract and engage the right customers. You’ll stop just pushing out your message and praying that it sticks somewhere. Potential and current customers want to be listened to, validated, and have a platform to be heard — especially online. Stratten coaches you on how to cultivate a strong relationship with your customers and make yourself the logical choice for their needs. He shows how to create a mindset and systems to roll out a new, 21st century marketing approach. He focuses on a Pull & Stay method (pulling your market towards you and staying/engaging with them, leading them to naturally choose you for their needs) rather than Push & Pray. He defines marketing as all points of engagement between a company and its customers, not just a single boxed-in activity. Traditional marketing methods are leading to diminishing returns and disaffected customers, says Stratten. The answer? Stop marketing, start UnMarketing! TOPIC: Un-Marketing 101 KEYNOTE SPEAKER: SCOTT STRATTEN SPEAKER SPONSOR $20,000 | Both Cities (see chart on page 12 for more details | Keynote reserved for Gold Sponsor) CONNECT, RECRUIT AND BUILD YOUR BRAND at what is anticipated to be a sold out event with 450 attendees expected. 84% of last year’s attendees said they would definitely or probably attend the 2015 CFP Professional Symposium, based on their satisfaction with the facilities and programming. This year’s Symposium – held in both Toronto and Vancouver – explores the theme of “Trust Matters”, with sessions sure to attract and engage Canada’s elite financial planners and industry decision makers. See page 5 to learn more about the print, online, and television audiences your brand will reach.

  • 11. SPEAKERSTOPIC: Why Good Clients Ignore Great Advice — Overcoming the Implementation Impasse DR. MOIRA SOMERS The human brain is one of the most amazing, elegant, vulnerable, and error-prone things in the universe. Add money to the mix, and things really get interesting! That’s where Dr. Moira Somers works — at the intersection of money and mind. Dr. Somers is a clinical neuropsychologist, professor and financial recovery expert. She is on the faculty with the Sudden Money Institute, where she trains advisors (many of whom are CFP professionals) on the psychological factors at play during major life transitions. She will be tackling some of the difficult questions that many professional planners face on a day-to-day basis. Why is it so hard for people to change, even when they really want to? How do feelings and beliefs hinder or help that change, particularly when it comes to the domain of money? What can be done to enhance successful outcomes? TOPIC: Issues with Trusts JOHN POYSER John Poyser is a partner with the law firm Tradition Law LLP, Estates and Trusts in Winnipeg. He is also principal of The Wealth & Estate Law Group in Calgary. He helps clients in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia pass wealth from one generation to the next while minimizing taxes and structuring special arrangements to improve the lives of beneficiaries. A seasoned author and presenter, John will be tackling some of the difficult Trust and Estate situations that financial planners may face in this era of an aging population and prevalence of persons with special needs.
