geological problems in designing civil structures, infrastructures and building.

-Geotechnics
Objectives:
The subject is aimed at giving basic concepts of soil mechanics and geotechnical characterization
of soil deposits by means of in situ and laboratory testing., in order to model soil behaviour and to
solve typical geotechnical problems like: bearing capacity and settlements of shallow foundations
and soil thrust on retaining structures.

-Hydraulics
Objectives:
knowledge and control of the physical fundamental laws which rule the incompressible fluids
statics and dynamics; the course covers the subject matter in hydraulic science dealt with in the civil
engineering.

-Architecutre and Architectural Composition
Objectives:
The teaching intends to make the students to have a method to design architectural spaces, making
reference to the one deriving from Modern Movement. From this point of view, some symbolic
works of this Movement are analysed and three design subjects are developed, about “minimum
spaces”, habitation and problematic typologies. A compulsory-attendance (min. 80%) practical
training course consisting in 40 hours is contemplated.

-Building Technology
Objectives:
The subject aims at giving the basic knowledge for the design of civil and industrial constructions,
referring to some practical examples. It is also aimed at the acquisition of the foundations of
architectural and technical composition through the practice of theoretical and experimental
research, on the basis of settlement choices, functional layout, typological and figurative invention,
structural and technological coherence. Technical elements constituting the building in relationship
with the characteristics of the materials and consistently with the environmental requirements of
the building.

                                                                                                     2
-Materials Science and Applied Chemistry
Objectives:
The course of materials science involves investigating the relationships that exist between the
structures and properties of materials. In contrast, materials engineering is, on the basis of these
structure–property correlations, designing or engineering the structure of a material to produce a
predetermined set of properties. Particular attention is concerning to the relationships between
material properties and structural elements.

-Drawing & CAD

-Foundations of Computers and CAD
Objectives:
The course is aimed at providing the theoretical basis and the operational tools for computer aided
architectural design. Course topics include the foundations of computer science, the main principles
of computer systems operation, and the basis of computer graphics for architectural design. A
compulsory-attendance (min. 80%) training course, consisting in 40 hours, is planned for
exemplifying the use of CAD tools and the realization of a project.

-Economics, Law and Science of Appraisal
Objectives:
The subject aims at giving the basic knowledge of Italian Legislation with special attention to
public works. Elements of Economics and Science of Appraisal are also given.

-Public Works and Buildings Legislation, Town Planning Law
Objectives:
The matters faced during the course regard the knowledge of the legal subjects, the types of
obligation and the regulations on the realization of the public and private works and the town
planning activity; it comes also faced the topic of the accident-prevention rules.

-Rational Mechanics
Objectives:
The teaching of Rational Mechanics has the aim of giving the theoretical bases for the analytic
treatment of statical and dynamical problems of buildings. Thus, the fundamental quantities of
mechanics and, in particular, forces and equivalent systems of forces are studied; moreover, the
statics and the dynamics of rigid bodies, also in presence of constraints, are considered.

We aim to supply students with skills about historical analysis and review, by focus on urban and architectural trends and milestones, introducing several subjects, centred on the main characters and key monuments. Because of the importance of visual language to know the architectural and urban occurrences and the way they were planned and built, the course sums up workshops which aim at graph review and interpretation of most important monuments. To complete the student’s education we moreover effort research methods and techniques in an analytic way. A compulsory-attendance (min. 80%) practical training course consisting in 40 hours is contemplated. -Structural Engineering Objectives: The course aims to provide building engineering students with the basic knowledge about design, analysis and assessment of steel and reinforced concrete structures, in linear and non linear fields, referring regularly to the modern probabilistic approaches to the structural safety and reliability. Beside that, a particular attention is devoted to the illustration of modern structural codes, like the Eurocodes and the new Italian Structural Codes, published in 2008, and largely based on Eurocodes themselves. -Technical Urban Planning Objectives: The course aims at analysing the relation between the environmental resources and the settlements, as well as the techniques for the territorial planning and management; the projectual exercises consist of urban plans or projects, including the analysis of the environmental context and the discussion of alternative proposals.
