Facebook is a Public Place!
Hello! Welcome to Fantacular Designs! We are going to demonstrate how to add your Facebook cover photo with step-by-step illustrations in a windows operating system. We will guide you through the whole procedure so that you can properly represent yourself or your company with a fabulous cover photo!
The first thing you want to do is choose the image you would like to use. Fortunately, the selection process has gotten much easier since Facebook (Click) reversed it’s position on most of the limitations regarding cover photos. Instead of a long list of dos & don’ts, (Click) there are only a few restrictions placed on these images. The first is (Click) the 20% rule, which states that no more than 20% of your image may be filled with text. We will talk about this more in just a little bit. The second rule (Click) is that you may not deceive people or mislead them about the contents of your page or sales you are offering, (Click) and you cannot violate any copyrights. Also, remember that (Click) this photo will be public! It can be seen by everyone on the internet, not just your Friends or Subscribers. (Click) It is best to choose something that is tasteful and honestly represents you or your business. If you are working along with us, just pause the video and look for a photo on your computer. When you find one that you like, push play and we will move on to the next slide.
Once you have chosen an image, check to be sure it is the right size for a cover photo. To do this, select the photo on your computer by clicking it one time. Now, you won’t have the big blue arrow on your screen. We have added that to help you identify the items we are referencing throughout this video.
After you click once on your photo, right click on it and a drop-down menu will appear. From that menu, select “Properties”.
A dialog box will appear on your screen. Click on the Details tab.
In the Details section you will see the pixels measurement in the Description.
The ideal size for your cover photo is 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. Unfortunately, most pictures are not the ideal size There are software programs available to adjust your image, or your graphic designer should be able to do this for you fairly quickly. If you don’t have a graphic designer, we would be happy to help you with this.
If you want to add any text to your image, Facebook requires that it be kept to 20% or under. The easiest way to stay within their limitations is to divide your image into 20 squares and decide which 4 squares you would like to put your text in.
When you are laying out this design, be sure you don’t put any text in the area that will be covered by the profile photo. Once you have your photo the way you want it, save it on your computer where you can find it easily. I usually save things I am working with to my desktop and then put them in files after my project is complete. The main thing is just to remember where your photo is.
Now that you have chosen your image, you need to go to your timeline. Scroll down to find the “Add a Cover” button shown above. When you find the “Add a Cover” button on your screen go ahead and click on that.
This dialog box will pop up, and Facebook will suggest you choose a nice photo and remind you of a few of their guidelines. Inside this box the last sentence says “Learn more about changing a cover photo.” “Learn more” is light blue font, and that means you can click on those words and go to another screen for more information from Facebook. We aren’t going to do that here because we discussed their rules, so just click the “Okay” button by the blue arrow.
A drop down menu will appear and you will have the option to “Choose from Photos”, “Add Synced Photo”, or “Upload Photo”. “Choose from Photos’” assumes that you have already been using Facebook for a while and you have photos in your albums that you want to choose from. “Add Synced Photo” we won’t address in this video. Right now we are going to show you how to upload a photo as though you are just setting up your account, and in the next video, “Changing Your Facebook Cover Photo”, we will show you how to change a photo from your existing albums. For this tutorial, go ahead and click on “Upload Photo”.
At this point, a box will open on your screen where you can access the files on your computer. Find the picture you selected earlier and click on it once.
Click the “Open” button at the bottom of the box by the arrow.
The box should close, and the image is loaded as your Facebook Cover! In the center of the photo is a dialog box that says, “Drag to Reposition Cover.” If your picture is not quite the right size, you can slide it around a little bit so the image that shows on the screen is exactly where you want it. Since we sized our image to Facebook’s recommendations, our image fills that area perfectly from edge to edge and doesn’t need to be adjusted.
Now that your photo has loaded, you want to be sure there isn’t any important information covered up by your profile picture. If you put your company name in that area on your cover photo, or if you have pictures of your staff along the bottom edge, anything under that box will not be seen. Now is the time to be sure you aren’t hiding the manager’s face or half the name of your company.
If everything looks good here, then click the “Save Changes” button by the arrow.
And now you are finished! Congratulations! You have a great cover photo to represent yourself or your business! Now, if you decide you want to change this photo, maybe you want to change it every season or you have a special event that you want to highlight, you can join us in our next video called, “Changing Your Facebook Cover Photo”.
