My report is on Cesar Estrada Chavez, an American Hero. Cesar Chavez fought for equal rights and fair payments for farm workers.Farm workers are people who pick the vegetables and fruit we eat everyday. Food that makes us healthy and improves our lives.Cesar Chavezis best known for fighting to make things fair for everyone.
Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona.He was one of six children in his family.His home and land were lost during the Great Depression in1929,so the family moved to California’s farms to work in the fields.In the Winter, the family would pick peas and lettuce.In the spring, cherries and beans. In the summer, they would pickcorn and grapes, and in the fall, they would pick cotton.Cesar finished high school as an adult, but as a young child he graduated 8thgrade, and then went to work as farm worker full time to support his family.
The first picture is of Cesar and his older sister, Rita.The second picture is of Cesar as a United States sailor.The third picture is of Cesar and Helen Chavez, his wife.The fourth picture is of Cesar and Helen’s family. They had 8 kids and their first child was named Fernando, like my father.
Cesar organized the United Farm Workers union itoimprove farm worker’s wages and working conditions.Like Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar believed in non-violence protests, walk-outs and strikes to persuade growers to negotiate better wages and living conditions.In 1966, Cesar led a 340 mile march to Sacramento to ask the Governor of California to pass laws to improve farm workers living conditions. The march was successful.Also, on three occasions, Cesar even fasted, risking his life to make other people’s lives better.Robert F. Kennedy, President John Kennedy’s brother, called Cesar “one of the heroic figures of our time.”
Cesar Chavez died on April 23, 1993, when he was 66 years old.Over 40,000 people attended his funeral. That’s about as many people in Angel Stadium.A year after his death, President Clinton awarded Cesar Chavez the US Medal of Freedom, the highest prize for American citizens.
In California,Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated onMarch31st.On Cesar Chavez Day, community members work on projects to improve the community and honor the life and work of Cesar Chavez. Also, seven other states celebrate Cesar Chavez Day.
This year, President Obama named March 31 Cesar Chavez National Day of Service.That means that our country works on projects to improve our schools, parks and communities.
People all over the world remember Cesar Chavez, as a man of courage, who fought to improve the lives of all people, especially farm workers, working people and poor people.Cesar was on the cover of Time Magazine and our country put Cesar Chavez on a stamp.
