4. Background
• Europe and US market mature markets with high competition
• 2008 Africa DUO project (Finpro, Tekes, TEM) which indicated
future growth market with maturing market potential. The
results showed that life science sector was one of the major
sectors with business potential.
• Need to define the business potential from marco-level to
micro-level.
• Maghreb countries have close trade relations with Europe and
ahead in their market maturation process

• All states are members of the Arab
Maghreb Union (l’Union de
Maghreb Arabe, UMA). UMA
promotes regional integration
with emphasis on economic and
political co-operation.
• IMF (International Monetary Fund)
divides the region into three groups:
- Major oil producers - Algeria and Libya
- Emerging markets - Morocco and Tunisia
- Poorest country - Mauritania (oil production
started in 2006)
• The population of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco is
around 77 million and the proportion of Muslims is
almost 100 %.
