2. Why geology and climate change adaptation?
• Geosciences support adaptation processes with data sets and
information and contributes to the science-stakeholder
dialogue
• Geology plays a key role in the identification of climate related
hazards, vulnerabilities and risks, also taking environmental
and socio-economic aspects into consideration
• VIETADAPT focuses on the science-stakeholder dialogue
• VIETADAPT supports the development and implementation of
climate change adaptation measures in land-use planning
(local, regional and national)

4. The BaltCICA project has
• …used scenario workshops for
science-stakeholder communication
• …contributed to new and/or
updated land-use and natural
resources protection plans
• …implemented adaptation
measures in flood prone areas in
Finland, Germany, Denmark,
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia
• …endorsed protection of
groundwater resources in Finland,
Denmark and Lithuania
• …peer reviewed and published the
results

5. VIETADAPT - Development and implementation of
climate change adaption measures in coastal areas in
Vietnam
• Funded by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs for Finland by ICI
(Institutional Co-operation
Instrument)
• Nov 2011 - Nov 2013
• Geological Survey of Finland
• The Vietnam Institute of
Meteorology, Hydrology and
Environment (IMHEN)
• The Centre for Water Resources
Planning and Investigation
(CWRPI)

7. VIETADAPT implementation:
– Studies of salt water intrusion to coastal aquifers and
surface waters
– Analysis on sea level rise impacts
– Communication with stakeholders to analyze and
address local interests and perceptions
– Local impact studies on environment, aquifers and fresh
water
– Training of young Vietnamese experts
Philipp Schmidt-Thomé 17 March 2014
8. VIETADAPT II
• Land-use is in a key position in both creating and preventing
damages
• Close science-stakeholder co-operation and dialogue to develop
feasible measures to reduce natural hazard and climate change
impacts
• Identify climate change adaptation measures on local level
• Prioritize non-regret measures
• Inform the private sector on project results to trigger spin off’s and
technological solutions

9. Business opportunities in Vietnam
• Water sector
– Drinking water quality (ground and surface water)
– Assessment of groundwater pollution
– EIA for different industrial activities
– Water resource management
– Water reservoirs
• (Waste sector / topic outside project scope)
– Proper landfills
– Recycling
– Industrial waste management (environmental laws)
• (Sewage water treatment / topic outside project scope)
– Cost efficient, easy to apply
