What is the 14-19 Reform ,[object Object]
“Technological change and the global economy are leading to a quantitative change in demand for knowledge workers and a broader range of work place competencies and soft skills that complement academic or technical skills. Education and training in the UK is changing in line with this to ensure that every young person has a high-quality, interesting and useful curriculum that will help them achieve their potential and progress to further and higher education and skilled employment.” (DCSF website),[object Object]
introducing a new set of qualifications, Diplomas in 17 subject areas at three levels by 2013
reforming A levels with a reduction in assessment while ensuring that every candidate is stretched and challenged
expanding Apprenticeship opportunities
increased emphasis on science, technology, engineering and maths ,[object Object]
Changes to A Levels Most subjects will be reduced from six units to four in order to reduce the burden of assessment. The introduction of ‘stretch and challenge’ at A2 to better prepare students for higher education and employment.  A* grade will be introduced to the grading of A level (A2 not AS)  The A* grade will be first awarded in 2010.
Implications of changes to GCSEs and A Levels
Diplomas The Diploma is a new qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience and is being rolled out over the next five years. By 2011, there will be 17 Diploma subjects available in England.  All Diplomas will require students to achieve a minimum standard in English, mathematics and ICT, complete a project and do a minimum of 10 days’ work experience.
