The document summarizes a workshop held by SAP Italia on doing social media marketing (SMM) in the B2B sector. It discusses how social media usage and platforms have grown significantly. While social media can influence B2C conversations, the B2B sector was slower to adopt social strategies. SAP Italia developed a social media strategy to humanize its brand and help customers learn rather than just sell. Their approach involved listening to conversations, creating social channels and content, engaging stakeholders, measuring results, and adjusting strategies over time based on learnings. Key lessons included developing an identity for social platforms, using web listening to inform decisions, and ensuring people drive engagement across functions.

This is a “map” of the social media landscape that has exploded with the proliferation of the InternetCompanies cannot afford to ignore these tools and platforms, because this is where there customers are- participating in communities, on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other digital forumsCompanies who ignore these communities, tools and platforms are, in a sense, ignoring their customersThis is a visual reason why social media is so important also for B2B: it is important to define the best SM for your own industry => The best for what? What are the objectives? And so, what are the best channels?
- 61 percent of U.S. marketers use social media to increase their lead generation => LinkedIn generates more leads for b2b companies than Facebook, Twitter or blogs. Yet only 47% of b2b marketers say they are actively using LinkedIn vs. 90% on Facebook. While the business to consumer (B2C) side of social media is both proven and well established, business to business (B2B) social marketing has been a harder sell. But the effort is paying off. A recent Business.com study showed that 55 percent of B2B survey respondents search for information using social mediaSome 53 percent of B2B companies actively use Twitter in their marketing efforts, but this is dwarfed by Facebook (90 percent), which generates about twice as many monthly leads overall. However, and as you might expect, it’s LinkedIn that rules the roost – while less than half of businesses actively use the platform, LinkedIn returns more leads than Facebook, Twitter or blogging for B2B marketers.

If you are not familiar with SAP, we are the world’s leading software solutions companyThere is not a country or an industry where we do not have a significant market presenceOur solutions help companies “run better”- they can reduce costs and delays in their operations, build stronger connections with their customers and help them manage and use the vast volumes of data within their business…so they can become a “best run company”
To give you a good picture of the scope of social media and its power, consider these comparison examples…90 million online visits. These online visitors are already what we would consider “engaged”- they have been motivated to visit one of our online sites. Our job is to make sure they find the content, information or a connection that can enable us to build an even deeper connection with that visitor.
