Les Copains de Noel
2. T
he day before Christmas, Tristan and Chantal were
making Christmas cards for their friends.
– I need the blue crayon, said Chantal, grabbing it
from in front of Tristan.
– But I’ll need it in a moment! replied Tristan angrily.
– Well, I’ll give it back when I’m finished, Chantal
answered.
L
Carole.

3. – I want it now! shouted Tristan as he grabbed the
crayon from Chantal, accidentally drawing a blue line
over her pretty card.
– Look what you’ve done! said Chantal, starting to
cry.
Grandpa Jake came quickly.
– What happened? he asked.
– Tristan ruined my card! wailed Chantal.
– But she took my crayon, argued Tristan.
carte, pleurnicha
Carole.
– Oui,
mais elle
m’a pris
mon
crayon !
riposta
Tristan.
4. – What a problem, Grandpa Jake said. It reminds me
of a problem Shallo the seahorse and Clip the crab had
once. Chantal and Tristan looked up as Grandpa Jake
reached for his storybook.
It was Christmas time in the Kingdom of Shadda,
he started. Old Budder, the blowfish and Goby were
hanging colourful seaweed as decorations everywhere.
5. – What do you think, Camille? Budder asked.
– Okay, Camille answered, looking sad. She was
lying on her bed, her tail wrapped in a bandage.
– Does your tail hurt? Goby asked kindly.
6. – Not really, sighed Camille. I’m just sad because
I have to lie still and I can’t swim around and help
decorate.
Christmas for Camille meant a special time with lots
of fun, but even though her friends had come to cheer
her up, she was still disappointed
that she
had to stay in
bed.
Suddenly,
a loud
sh !
cra
and angry shouts
were heard
outside.
Goby
and Budder
swam to the
window. It’s Shallo and Clip,“ Goby told Camille.
7. Looks like they’re having a problem. We’ll be right back!
Goby and Old Budder ran outside to find out what
was happening. It turned out Shallo and Clip had been
collecting colourful shells for Camille’s decorations, but
they had argued over whose were the prettiest and
ended up fighting, scattering the shells all over the
seabed.
8. – You always take credit for everything! Clip
shouted. You just want Camille to think you’re better
than me.
– That’s not true! returned Shallo.
The crab and seahorse started fighting,
shoving and pushing each other again.
– Tu veux toujours te faire valoir !
hurla Clip, pour que Camille
pense que tu es meilleur que
moi.
– Ce n’est pas vrai !
répliqua Hubert.
Et la dispute reprit
de plus belle. Ils se
poussaient, se
bousculaient...
9. – That’s
enough! Old Budder
said firmly, and both
Shallo and Clip went quiet
and sulked at each other.
– Arguing about who is right
and who is wrong is not going to
help. You need to listen to each other and
find a solution without fighting. Agreed?
Shallo and Clip nodded their heads,
still sulking.
– Ça suffit ! interrompit le vieux Mondéo,
avec autorité.
Hubert et Clip s’arrêtèrent net. Mais ils ruminaient
toujours de colère.
– Ça n’avance à rien de savoir qui a tort ou qui
a raison.
10. – Well, Clip started first.
Shallo kept saying his shells
were prettier than mine, and
every time I went to pick a shell
up, he’d always rush in front of
me and get there first. He didn’t
stop when I asked him to, and it
made me so angry.
– Eh bien, commença Clip,
Hubert ne cessait de dire que
ses coquillages étaient plus
beaux que les miens. Et chaque
fois que j’allais en ramasser un,
il se précipitait pour l’attraper
avant moi. Quand je lui ai
demandé d’arrêter, il ne m’a
pas écouté, et ça m’a mis très
en colère.
10
11. – Did you realize you were making
Clip feel bad? Old Budder asked,
turning to Shallo.
– No, I didn’t mean to, Shallo
explained. I just wanted to do something
nice for Camille because she’s hurt.
– I see, Old Budder nodded. Now
that you both understand each other, you
can apologise and make up.
Se tournant vers Hubert, Mondéo lui
demanda :
– As-tu réalisé que tu n’étais pas
gentil avec Clip ?
– Non, je ne cherchais pas à le
contrarier, expliqua Hubert. Je
voulais simplement faire plaisir
à Camille parce qu’elle s’est
blessée.
– Je vois, fit Mondéo.
Maintenant
que vous
vous êtes
expliqués,
vous pouvez
peut-être vous
excuser et vous
réconcilier.
11
12. Shallo thought for a moment, then he said,
– I’m sorry Clip. I didn’t mean to make you angry.
Please forgive me.
– Of course, Clip answered, smiling. I’m sorry for
getting so angry, too.
– Come on, Goby said. Let’s take these pretty
shells in to
Camille.
Hubert, pensif, finit par dire :
– Je suis désolé, Clip. Je ne voulais pas te faire du
tort. Pardonne-moi.
– Bien sûr, répondit Clip avec un sourire. Je regrette
aussi de m’être mis en colère.
– Allons donc porter ces jolis coquillages à Camille !
conclut Gobie.
12
13. They
gathered up the
dropped shells
and brought
them to
Camille, who
smiled happily
at each pretty
shell, and
almost
forgot
about her
bandaged
tail.
Ils rassemblèrent les coquillages éparpillés et les
apportèrent à Camille. Celle-ci accueillit chaque
coquillage avec un sourire de ravissement. Elle en
oublia presque sa blessure.
13
14. – Thank you so much, she said, her eyes sparkling.
You’ve made me feel better even if I have to stay in
bed. Merry Christmas, everyone!
– Merry Christmas! the others answered.
14
15. When Grandpa Jake had closed his book, Tristan looked
at the blue crayon in his hand. He handed it to Chantal.
— I’m sorry, he said. I should have let you use the
crayon when I didn’t need it.
— Well, I shouldn’t have grabbed it, Chantal said. I’m
sorry, too.
— You see, Grandpa Jake smiled. There are ways to sort
things out without getting upset and arguing.
— Let me help you fix your card, Tristan offered to
Chantal, and that’s just what he did.
Lorsque Grand-père eut refermé son livre, Tristan
regarda le crayon bleu dans sa main. Il le tendit à
Carole :
a toujours moyen d’arranger
les choses sans se mettre en
colère, ni se disputer.
— Puis-je
t’aider à refaire
ta carte ? offrit
Tristan.
Et aussitôt, il se
mit au travail.

16. Moral
Morale
Arguing and
fighting don’t help
to sort out problems.
They usually only
make you more angry.
Try love and thoughtfulness
instead, and you’ll see how
much better things work.
Les disputes
n’apportent pas de
solution aux problèmes.
