Šaakal Riik: Loomad Animalia Hõimkond: Keelikloomad Chordata Klass: Imetajad Mammalia Selts: Kiskjalised Carnivora Sugukond: Koerlased Canidae Perekond: Koer Canis
Šaakali levila ulatub Kesk-Aafrikast Lähis-Ida ja Kesk-Aasia kaudu Hindustani poolsaareni. Levila põhjapiir läbib Kaukaasia ja Moldova ning Ungari ja Austria. Harilik šaakal on ainus šaakal, kes elab väljaspool Aafrikat, seda koguni 13 alamliigina. Tegemist on väga kohanemisvõimelise liigiga, kes suudab toituda vastavalt võimalustele ja elada mitmesugustel aladel, sealhulgas Aafrika savannides, Kaukaasia mägedes ja India metsades.
Šaakal on osav ja isegi jultunud kiskja. Eriti kehtib see nendele isenditele, kes elavad asulate läheduses ja puutuvad inimestega kokku. Üldiselt on šaakal ööloom, aga võib tegutseda ka päeval.
