New refrigerated transport solutions
for the food and pharmaceutical professionals
The “Cold Chain”
Temperature sensitive products (food, pharmaceuticals) must be refrigerated or frozen
after processing and before shipment to inhibit spoilage, growth of pathogen or loss of
potential (vaccines).
From production to consumer a temperature-controlled supply chain (the “Cold Chain”)
shall be settled.
An unbroken cold chain is an uninterrupted series of storage and distribution activities
which maintain a given temperature range.
Food hygiene and food transport legislation
For us Europeans, the main regulator about food hygiene , pharmaceutical distribution and Cold
Chain related issues is the European Union.
The main norm about food hygiene is the Directive 93/43/EEC (The “HACCP” Directive: Hazard
analysis and critical control points) updated the Regulation (EC) 852/2004
Annex II, Chapter IV of 93/43/EEC is dedicated to transport:
1. Conveyances and/or containers used for transporting foodstuffs are to be kept clean and
maintained in good repair and condition to protect foodstuffs from contamination and are, where
necessary, to be designed and constructed to permit adequate cleaning and/or disinfection.
7. Where necessary, conveyances and/or containers used for transporting foodstuffs are to be
capable of maintaining foodstuffs at appropriate temperatures and allow those temperatures to be
monitored
Another norm of interest is the Directive 89/108/EEC, about quick-frozen foodstuffs for human
consumption
Article 5 1. The temperature of quick-frozen foodstuffs must be stable and maintained, at all points
in the product, at −18ºC or lower, with possibly brief upward fluctuations of no more than 3ºC
during transport.
Another very important norm about the transport of perishable items is the ATP agreement
(United Nations / European Commission Inland Transport Committee: Agreement on the
International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs and on the Special Equipment to be Used for such
Carriage, ECE/TRANS/165).
The ATP applies to the carriage of perishable foodstuffs performed on the territory of at least two
Contracting States not only by road, but also by rail and by sea. In addition, a number of countries
(like France, Italy, Spain) have also adopted the ATP as the basis for their national legislation.
The ATP establishes the appropriate temperatures under which the various types of perishable
foodstuffs should be carried.
It also lays down the requirements for the equipment, including its refrigerating capacity,
insulating capacity (“K” insulation coefficient) and efficiency of thermal appliances as well as the
methods and procedures for measuring and checking them.
The ATP agreement is the only norm that is setting “performance” values about the construction
and insulation of “isothermal” vehicles and cargos.
For such a reason ATP is becoming more and more a reference for the market.
Pharmaceutical logistic legislation
An increasing number of medicinal products require controlled storage and transportation
conditions of between +2ºC and +8ºC.
Meanwhile, the effect of elevated temperatures on the chemical stability of medicines is well
recognized by those in the supply chain, but elevated temperatures can also have an adverse
effect on the physical properties of some formulation types. Separation of emulsion systems and
sedimentation of active ingredients in suspensions and semi-solids are among the changes that
can occur.
Some companies do not pay sufficient attention to monitoring and controlling temperatures in their
warehouses - nor do they have the right knowledge of the temperature distribution therein. On a
sunny day in Summer, temperatures in a van can vary reach up +45ºC near the roof.
European Legislation about the transport of pharmaceuticals is not so stringent like the one about
food hygiene.
The norm of reference is the Directive 92/25/EEC, with the relevant “Guidelines on Good
Distribution Practice of Medicinal Products for Human Use” (94/C 63/03):
21. Medicinal products requiring controlled temperature storage should also be transported by
appropriately specialized means.
About blood products the norm of reference is the Recommendation R (95) 15 “Guide to the
preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components”:
Blood components are stored at +20°C to +24°C, at +2°C to +6°C or at different temperatures
below 0°C. The containers used in transport should be well insulated, easy to clean and easy to
handle.
After collection, blood should be kept at a controlled temperature, between +2°C and +6°C.
Validated transport systems should ensure that at the end of a maximum transit time of 24 hours
the temperature should not have exceeded +10 °C.
Alternatively, whole blood can be kept up to 24 hours in conditions validated to maintain
temperature between +20°C and +24°C, a prerequisite for the production of platelet preparations
from whole blood.
Red cell components should be kept between +2°C and +6°C. Validated transport systems should
ensure that at the end of a maximum transit time of 24 hours the temperature should not have
exceeded +10°C. Transport by a non-refrigerated vehicle requires a cooled and insulated
container.
Up to now the solution of choice for the transport of perishable items was
the conversion of vans, with the use of insulated linings and refrigeration units.
Costly solution if you have to transport only limited volume of goods, considering also the
financial immobilization involved and the limited resale value of the used refrigerated van.


A new solution for the transport of perishable items:
the use of a mobile fridge/freezer, with professional specifications and 12-24V compressor on
board of a standard van: flexibility and intelligent use of resources at its best.
The professional mobile fridge can be used for the purpose loaded on the van, connected to the
battery and properly fixed with straps to anchoring rings inside the van.
Then easily unloaded to allow the use of the van for purpose others than for the transport of
perishables.
The Euroengel concept
        To mix together the best DC
 compressor technology (Danfoss), the
 high insulation efficiency requested by
  “ATP” International norm, the ease of
 cleaning and hyigienization requested
by HACCP norms, the set and control of
    internal temperature requested by
 “Cold-chain” norms, also adding clever
details to help professional operators to
       manage their daily business.
   The result is a range of models with
   inner volumes from 22 to 915 litres,
    12-24Vdc and 100-240Vac 50-60Hz
  voltage, reinforced PU insulation with
 thickness from 65 to 130 mm, internal
    temperatures adjustable down to -
   24°C (according to the models) with
digital controller, based on rotomoulded
 single piece sturdy containers, easy to
  be cleaned, with internal dimensions
     according to food industry norms
         (Gastronorm, Euronorm).
Who are the potential users?
The Euroengel concept has already convinced several type of customers:
‒ Catering & Banqueting companies
‒ Vending operators for mixed ref/no-ref transport
‒ Van rental companies
‒ Food industries for transport of samples by sales reps
‒ Small food producers for direct transport to selected shops or restaurants
‒ Food distributors for direct deliveries to selected shops or restaurants, specially in traffic
 restriction areas
‒ Small ice cream laboratories for transport of ice cream and sorbets to selected hotels &
 restaurants
‒ Home delivery services (web shops or supermarkets)
‒ Health Authorities for transport of samples of biological products to Central Laboratories or
 transport of blood or plasma at stable temperature
‒ Pharmaceutical logistic companies for deliveries to pharmacies of vaccines and +4°C
 medicines by use of standard vans
‒ Army and Emergency Medical Detachments and Logistic Corps

T0022 and T0032 are the best solution for
transport of refrigerated or frozen
samples, while the T0056 and T0082 are
perfect multipurpose units.

Euroengel is in full control of all the know-how required
to develop and produce a quality insulated container
using the rotational molding technology.
The technical staff of Euroengel is managing every step
of the development of a new mobile professional
refrigerator:
– the definition of technical specifications together with
the management and prospective customer
– the 3D CAD design of the unit
– the 3D CAD design of the production tools (for both
rotational moulding and foaming)
– the co-ordination of the production of the
manufacturing tools
– the definition of the production cycle instructions
– the functional tests on prototypes
– the homologation process, when required
The Euroengel’s production
facility is ISO 9001:2008
certified.
Samples of models were tested
by TÜV SÜD Italy according to
electric safety norms; the
“Production monitored – Safety
tested” Certification Mark was
granted.
The partnership is also developing with
Peugeot Professional
Peugeot Italy has this launched month
a marketing campaign focused on the
“package” Partner van plus F0785.
Over the last few years the Euroengel units were tested and acquired by several top
international customers, that were looking for professional tools able to satisfy their need of
high performance flexible transportation of small quantity of perishable items in accordance
to the Norms and Regulations of their market segment.


Euroengel has been collaborating with Ferrero SpA since 2005.
Hundreds of the 22 and 32 liters models are normally used by
Ferrero’s lab personnel and by sales reps for the safe transportation of
samples at the required temperature.


120 small Euroengel top loaders were acquired by SAAB Aerotech in
2009 and supplied to the Swedish Defence Forces; they are used for
the transportation of blood and plasma bags by mobile medical
detachments. Another lot is planned for 2011.

  • 1. New refrigerated transport solutions for the food and pharmaceutical professionals
  • 2. The “Cold Chain” Temperature sensitive products (food, pharmaceuticals) must be refrigerated or frozen after processing and before shipment to inhibit spoilage, growth of pathogen or loss of potential (vaccines). From production to consumer a temperature-controlled supply chain (the “Cold Chain”) shall be settled. An unbroken cold chain is an uninterrupted series of storage and distribution activities which maintain a given temperature range.
  • 3. Food hygiene and food transport legislation For us Europeans, the main regulator about food hygiene , pharmaceutical distribution and Cold Chain related issues is the European Union. The main norm about food hygiene is the Directive 93/43/EEC (The “HACCP” Directive: Hazard analysis and critical control points) updated the Regulation (EC) 852/2004 Annex II, Chapter IV of 93/43/EEC is dedicated to transport: 1. Conveyances and/or containers used for transporting foodstuffs are to be kept clean and maintained in good repair and condition to protect foodstuffs from contamination and are, where necessary, to be designed and constructed to permit adequate cleaning and/or disinfection. 7. Where necessary, conveyances and/or containers used for transporting foodstuffs are to be capable of maintaining foodstuffs at appropriate temperatures and allow those temperatures to be monitored Another norm of interest is the Directive 89/108/EEC, about quick-frozen foodstuffs for human consumption Article 5 1. The temperature of quick-frozen foodstuffs must be stable and maintained, at all points in the product, at −18ºC or lower, with possibly brief upward fluctuations of no more than 3ºC during transport.
  • 4. Another very important norm about the transport of perishable items is the ATP agreement (United Nations / European Commission Inland Transport Committee: Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs and on the Special Equipment to be Used for such Carriage, ECE/TRANS/165). The ATP applies to the carriage of perishable foodstuffs performed on the territory of at least two Contracting States not only by road, but also by rail and by sea. In addition, a number of countries (like France, Italy, Spain) have also adopted the ATP as the basis for their national legislation. The ATP establishes the appropriate temperatures under which the various types of perishable foodstuffs should be carried. It also lays down the requirements for the equipment, including its refrigerating capacity, insulating capacity (“K” insulation coefficient) and efficiency of thermal appliances as well as the methods and procedures for measuring and checking them. The ATP agreement is the only norm that is setting “performance” values about the construction and insulation of “isothermal” vehicles and cargos. For such a reason ATP is becoming more and more a reference for the market.
  • 5. Pharmaceutical logistic legislation An increasing number of medicinal products require controlled storage and transportation conditions of between +2ºC and +8ºC. Meanwhile, the effect of elevated temperatures on the chemical stability of medicines is well recognized by those in the supply chain, but elevated temperatures can also have an adverse effect on the physical properties of some formulation types. Separation of emulsion systems and sedimentation of active ingredients in suspensions and semi-solids are among the changes that can occur. Some companies do not pay sufficient attention to monitoring and controlling temperatures in their warehouses - nor do they have the right knowledge of the temperature distribution therein. On a sunny day in Summer, temperatures in a van can vary reach up +45ºC near the roof. European Legislation about the transport of pharmaceuticals is not so stringent like the one about food hygiene. The norm of reference is the Directive 92/25/EEC, with the relevant “Guidelines on Good Distribution Practice of Medicinal Products for Human Use” (94/C 63/03): 21. Medicinal products requiring controlled temperature storage should also be transported by appropriately specialized means.
  • 6. About blood products the norm of reference is the Recommendation R (95) 15 “Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components”: Blood components are stored at +20°C to +24°C, at +2°C to +6°C or at different temperatures below 0°C. The containers used in transport should be well insulated, easy to clean and easy to handle. After collection, blood should be kept at a controlled temperature, between +2°C and +6°C. Validated transport systems should ensure that at the end of a maximum transit time of 24 hours the temperature should not have exceeded +10 °C. Alternatively, whole blood can be kept up to 24 hours in conditions validated to maintain temperature between +20°C and +24°C, a prerequisite for the production of platelet preparations from whole blood. Red cell components should be kept between +2°C and +6°C. Validated transport systems should ensure that at the end of a maximum transit time of 24 hours the temperature should not have exceeded +10°C. Transport by a non-refrigerated vehicle requires a cooled and insulated container.
  • 7. Up to now the solution of choice for the transport of perishable items was the conversion of vans, with the use of insulated linings and refrigeration units. Costly solution if you have to transport only limited volume of goods, considering also the financial immobilization involved and the limited resale value of the used refrigerated van. A new solution for the transport of perishable items: the use of a mobile fridge/freezer, with professional specifications and 12-24V compressor on board of a standard van: flexibility and intelligent use of resources at its best. The professional mobile fridge can be used for the purpose loaded on the van, connected to the battery and properly fixed with straps to anchoring rings inside the van. Then easily unloaded to allow the use of the van for purpose others than for the transport of perishables.
  • 8. The Euroengel concept To mix together the best DC compressor technology (Danfoss), the high insulation efficiency requested by “ATP” International norm, the ease of cleaning and hyigienization requested by HACCP norms, the set and control of internal temperature requested by “Cold-chain” norms, also adding clever details to help professional operators to manage their daily business. The result is a range of models with inner volumes from 22 to 915 litres, 12-24Vdc and 100-240Vac 50-60Hz voltage, reinforced PU insulation with thickness from 65 to 130 mm, internal temperatures adjustable down to - 24°C (according to the models) with digital controller, based on rotomoulded single piece sturdy containers, easy to be cleaned, with internal dimensions according to food industry norms (Gastronorm, Euronorm).

The Euroengel concept has already convinced several type of customers: ‒ Catering & Banqueting companies ‒ Vending operators for mixed ref/no-ref transport ‒ Van rental companies ‒ Food industries for transport of samples by sales reps ‒ Small food producers for direct transport to selected shops or restaurants ‒ Food distributors for direct deliveries to selected shops or restaurants, specially in traffic restriction areas ‒ Small ice cream laboratories for transport of ice cream and sorbets to selected hotels & restaurants ‒ Home delivery services (web shops or supermarkets) ‒ Health Authorities for transport of samples of biological products to Central Laboratories or transport of blood or plasma at stable temperature ‒ Pharmaceutical logistic companies for deliveries to pharmacies of vaccines and +4°C medicines by use of standard vans ‒ Army and Emergency Medical Detachments and Logistic Corps

  • 21. Euroengel is in full control of all the know-how required to develop and produce a quality insulated container using the rotational molding technology. The technical staff of Euroengel is managing every step of the development of a new mobile professional refrigerator: – the definition of technical specifications together with the management and prospective customer – the 3D CAD design of the unit – the 3D CAD design of the production tools (for both rotational moulding and foaming) – the co-ordination of the production of the manufacturing tools – the definition of the production cycle instructions – the functional tests on prototypes – the homologation process, when required
  • 22. The Euroengel’s production facility is ISO 9001:2008 certified. Samples of models were tested by TÜV SÜD Italy according to electric safety norms; the “Production monitored – Safety tested” Certification Mark was granted.

Over the last few years the Euroengel units were tested and acquired by several top international customers, that were looking for professional tools able to satisfy their need of high performance flexible transportation of small quantity of perishable items in accordance to the Norms and Regulations of their market segment. Euroengel has been collaborating with Ferrero SpA since 2005. Hundreds of the 22 and 32 liters models are normally used by Ferrero’s lab personnel and by sales reps for the safe transportation of samples at the required temperature. 120 small Euroengel top loaders were acquired by SAAB Aerotech in 2009 and supplied to the Swedish Defence Forces; they are used for the transportation of blood and plasma bags by mobile medical detachments. Another lot is planned for 2011.
