16. The 4 Challenges
1. The production challenge – we must
produce enough nourishing food for
9 billion people by 2050.
2. The ecological challenge – we must
do so whilst keeping within critical
planetary boundaries for the use of
land, water, atmospheric space and
genetic resources.
17. The 4 Challenges
3. The equity challenge – we must
empower women and men living in
poverty with the resources to grow
or buy enough food to eat.
4. The resilience challenge – we must
manage volatility in food prices, and
reduce vulnerability to climate
change.

More ShocksThe world is experiencing more shocks and this is trend that is liable to continue. The Global Financial Crisis and the consequent emergence of the G20, the large food price hikes of 2007/8, the mega-disasters experienced in Haiti and Pakistan are all examples of these. The growing inter-connectedness of our financial, communication and social systems means that shocks in one part of the world are rapidly transmitted through a diverse set of channels to other parts of the world.
An example of climate change creating ‘shocks’ with the frozen Jet Stream winds being linked to Russian Fires and Pakistan Floods – adding to growing uncertainty
