Profile:
A highly motivated and enthusiastic college graduate with a good knowledge of the biological
and earth sciences. Excellent exposure to research environments where adaptability and
willingness to learn new skills were put to the test. First-class communication and organizational
skills with the will and determination needed to succeed. Proven to rise to new challenges and
be able to gain new skills and knowledge from said challenges.
Major Accomplishments:
• Graduated with honors from Coral Park Senior High /excelled in several Advanced
Placement courses.
• Member of Honor Society for entire university career, maintaining a high GPA.
• Earned an Internship Certificate of Completion with the FIU Office of University
Sustainability.
• Earned a Certificate of Recognition for participating in the Florida Wildlife
Commission's Python Challenge. Searched for invasive Burmese pythons in Water
Conservation Areas and other designated sites for the purpose of controlling wild python
populations and the education of the general public.
• Mastered geographical layering using GIS software and general usage of cataloging
software later used for research endeavors.
• Performed a joint study at FIU's Modesto Maidique Campus where bird window
collisions were quantified and possible causes/solutions determined. Data collected on
campus by team was then compared to national dataset compiled by 30 other university
research teams nationwide.
• Presented a joint research project at the Undergraduate Research Conference at FIU's
Modesto Maidique Campus and at the Bio-symposium at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus.
Education/Qualifications:
• Secondary School - Miami Coral Park Senior High, August 2004- June 2008.
Graduated with honors/excelled in several Advanced Placement courses.
• Associate of Arts - Miami Dade College, August 2008-June 2011. Graduated with
honors and member of the National Honor Society.
2. • Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (B.S.) - Florida International University,
August 2011- August 2015. Bachelor of Biological Sciences earned with honors.
Member of the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society and continued member of the
National Honor Society.
Experience:
• Zoo Miami Docent Volunteer, June-August 2007, June-August 2008.
Performed educational presentation/animal close-ups at Zoo Miami's Dr. Wilde's World
and Children's Zoo for the purpose of engaging guests and later answering any
questions. Also aided keepers in the upkeep of approximately two dozen small
mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
• FIU Nature Preserve Intern, September 2012 - December 2012.
Conducted biodiversity surveys with a focus on herpetofauna (amphibians/reptiles) and
butterflies. Also assisted Nature Preserve Manager of Sustainability, Ryan Vogel, with
the upkeep of the preserve and peer-led educational tours in order to teach other students
about South Florida’s native biodiversity.
• FIU Seagrass Research Lab Assistant, June -August 2012, June-August 2013.
Assisted graduate students with the collection and processing of seagrass leaves and root
systems originating in Biscayne Bay. Lab researchers were investigating the carbon
sequestration potential of seagrass beds in coastal areas and the condition of seagrass
beds in Biscayne Bay after decades of stress from human development. Major focus was
also placed on the ecosystem dynamics of seagrass beds in relation to their distribution
over time throughout Biscayne Bay.
• Supervised Undergraduate Researcher, October 2014 – October 2015.
Aided a graduate student, Haydee Borrero, in the study of pollinator behavior centered
on an orchid species found in several sites within Everglades National park. Performed a
joint study at FIU's Modesto Maidique Campus where bird window collisions were
recorded around designated buildings on campus. The buildings’ floor space area,
window area, and the amount of vegetation around the buildings were all considered as
factors for said bird collisions. The data collected on campus by team was then compared
to a national data-set compiled by 30 other university research teams nationwide.
• FIU Learning Assistant, August 2014 – April 2015.
Evolution and genetics learning assistant. Aided Dr. Bishop and Dr. Schimdtmayerova in
learning enhancement and classroom organization while providing a bridge between
student and professor. As a consequence, helped in FIU's transition towards a more
active learning institution.
• FIU Urban Ecology Lab Assistant, June 2014 – Present.
Assisted Dr. John Withey with the creation and sorting of polygons, using GIS software,
representing the migratory ranges of species in the Endangered Species List. This was
3. accomplished in order to more effectively map migration patterns and aid in future
critical habitat designation. Also obtained data from the US Fish and Wildlife Service,
Florida Wildlife Commission, and the National Park Service in order to identify the
opportunity cost of critical habitat designation under the US Endangered Species Act.
• FIU Plant Ecophysiology Lab Assistant, January 2015 – Present.
Assisted Dr. Oberbauer with upkeep of plant samples taken from various field sites
representing different ecosystems, including tundra in Alaska and the Everglades in
South Florida. Also processed plant and soil samples in the lab for radiocarbon analysis
and monitoring of carbon cycle in the ecosystem of origin.
Additional Information:
• IT skills: Proficient in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Power point), GIS (Arc Catalog,
ArcMap).
• University activities: volunteered several times for the FIU Sustainability Office,
member of FIU's G.LA.D.E.S. Ecology club, new member of FIU's Wings Ornithology
club, raised awareness of the dangers of climate change/ part of 350.org FIU chapter.
• Interests/hobbies: reading and keeping up with news on solutions for environmental
problems, exploring nature, learning more about the incredible biodiversity of this planet.
