Notes de l'éditeur
The academic material I found most helpful were the Ice house Lesson videos each lesson had its own uniqueness but the lesson that stood out the most was Creating Community.
Creating Community really relates to what kind of influences you want to be around. The lesson shows the impact of the networks that we choose to be with.
Work on purpose showed me how people can do great things if they change their mindsets. In addition I witnessed the story of Andrew and his efforts to creating change by helping a homeless man get a job – discouragement - persistance
Lisa Vaughn taught us the most important things. She gave us the facts and demographics about the social media platforms we used such as :
Geography is Destiny – Chad Berry explained this when we talked to him very early in the summer term. This concept resonates with me because I was able to witness two counties that have been isolated because of their location. Campton being approximately ten minutes from Red River Gorge is often overlooked because of the mountains and the winding roads. Because of the distance from the Gorge, tourist tend not to travel to Campton.
Changing Mindsets – this was important to me because I noticed that in both lee and wolf county, I saw that people were so used to their mediocre lifestyles. This lifestyle is one primary reason for then not accepting change. We learned that in these eastern Kentucky counties, people did not want the change because it will affect the way that they live. An example from Switch … is when it talks about the code developer and when his product is tested by customers, the developer is reluctant to change his code because he loves his code.
The concept starts with your with what you love to do
When you do the things that you enjoy and motivates you
You will get to hustke
Heart what you love to do
Head is what you know
Hustle is the phase where you are happy and achieved your outcome.
Explain Creeper
Explain Barter
Phenomenon
Pattern Recognition – we studied pattern recognition in class on several occasions and we even presented it to several students at the Hal Rogers Scholars workshop. This resonated with me because it forced me to see the images in a different way despite how I was already perceiving them.
The three key EPG abilities and insights I gained while participating in the EPG institute this summer was, Mobilizing Resources, Recognizing Opportunity, and engaging in uncertainty and ambiguity.
I gained the ability to engage in uncertainty and ambiguity because I was pushed to elaborate and learn about the eastern Appalachian area in which I had very little knowledge. I was able to recognize opportunity when speaking with people in the community; some of the opportunities I found were things like going on hiking trails with Dedra Brandenburg and Julie Hendrix, other opportunities consisted of my going kayaking, biking and my colleagues being able to secure activities such as ATV and zip lining.
In addition,
I figured that mobilizing resources was important in that the counties I visited did not have much to offer; that meant that they had to bring out the best that they had. Recently Beattyville has opened a new art gallery which is them mobilizing their resources.
I have always been a kinesthetic learner. This summer I learned that I also learn well through visuals. While I still learn well by doing things, I have noticed that having visuals puts things into perspective. An example can be things such as pattern recognition. The main reason I say this is because without the actual visual one can assume different things and I found that to be the case at some times.
If I were to describe my personal theory of entrepreneurial Leadership, I would say Foundation and analysis.
… Civic Leadership
My team attempted to educate both Lee and Wolfe County in what a trail town is and why changing a mindset is important. We attempted this in an effort to help them grow economically by bringing in adventure tourists money.
I assumed that both counties were nowhere near trying to start a trail town. To my surprise the Town of Beattyville has already sent a letter to the tourism office in KY and they are in the process of beginning to become a trail town.
The average household size helped put things into context seeing as the younger members are having to go out of town to seek for jobs and more of the older generation has jobs thus they stay in town
We learned from Chuck Caudill who is currently running for executive judge that people are living off of the money that the government gives them thus the unemployment rate is what it is
The public common good is the trail town being built.
The trail town brings in tourists money
Best interest to grow economy
When we met Dedra she came off as an enthusiast for the trail town. We quickly learned that Ali was her intern last summer and she then took us to go see the river.
Meeting Julie Hendrix we went on several trails and learned more about the community through them
In Wolfecounty we found some trail town enthusiasts. Through them I found out that there are some individuals that just will not allow for a trail to be built on his property.
I view this issue as lack of education about trails in the community. The best way to solve this is to demonstrate it and show progress through numbers.
Which is something that Wolfe county has started. By imposing a tax on the lodges they get revenue to fund certain projects.
The most significant new piece of civic leadership information about the Appalachian Region for me is the role of the tourism Director.
While they may or may not be the catalyst for the process of becoming a trail town, they do a tremendous amount of work to get things going.
I fell under the assumption that we were going to be assisting a starting business. These assumptions were led on by previous EPG members and some alumn. What I did expect was to be working hands on in different areas.
This assumption was fulfilled and I was able to understand that as an individual I am capable to my skillsets however as part of a group I can accomplish much more as together we have multiple skillsets.
If I had the opportunity to do this all over again I would pay much more attention to the details and assess everything for better comprehension
I would also be more open minded
I found myself agreeing most of the time rather that offering other options
Through the Icehouse Discovery Canvas and the Entrepreneurs, i gained a vast knowledge of the following ….
The mindset is most important because it is a reflection of who we are through our emotions actions and behaviors. Changing ones mindset is difficult because one needs to change his or her own behaviors.
Second most important is your network. Knowing the mentors in your life is important so that you can differentiate from those who are not there to support you.
Last but not least Acquiring Wealth. Knowiing how to spend your money is a great skill to have. An example of how one chooses to use money that will always stick with me is when one of the entrepreneurs in the icehouse videos explains when he sees a car he wants, he will start a savings for that vehicle and once he has accumulated that money, he will invest it in something else and not the car.
As I look back on the institute the key experience for me was biking because…..
Second …Because it was a unique experience
This summer was very eye opening … I have traveled across … lived in Huge Cities or metropolis … learning about rural areas like Wolfe and Lee county brings a different perspective…
