self-regulation, and motivation and

value system.

translates to performance results.

statement.
6. Goals and Goal-Setting
Goal-setting is a process by which we
identify our goals.
concentrates on how goals
indicate and give direction to an individual
about what needs to be done and how much
effort is required to be put in to achieve a
given task or goal.
8. Set your goals on at least three (3)
levels:
Create a “big picture” of what you want to
do with your life
Break them into smaller or short-term
targets that correspond to steps you must
accomplish to hit your goal
Start working to achieve them
9. Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals
Career
Financial
Education
Family
Artistic
Attitude
Physical
Pleasure
Public Service
10. Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals
Smaller goals might be to:
– Read books
– Gather information about your higher goals
– Etc.
11. S.M.A.R.T.
S – Specific (Significant)
M – Measurable (Meaningful)

12. More Tips for Goal-Setting:
1. State each goal as a positive statement.
2. Be precise.
3. Set priorities.
4. Write those goals down!
5. Keep operational goals (short-term goals)
small.
6. Set performance goals not outcome goals
13. When we know what our goals are, we
pretty much know what our mission is.
-Goals represent the verbal translation
of your mission.
17. Self-determination
Self-determination is the “process of
endorsing one’s actions at the highest level
of reflection” and that, when we are self-
determined, we expectedly experience a
sense of freedom.
18. Values
Values convictions about what we feel
are important and attractive, advantageous,
or beneficial.

what we envision complements what we
strongly believe in.
19. Paying due attention to our values helps us:
a. Become more self-aware
b. Make ethical decisions
c. Prioritize our tasks
d. Develop credibility as a leader
20. Strategic Planning
D – Draw
(What is the ideal image of the desired end state?)
S – See
(What is the situation today? Are there gaps?)
T – Think
(What actions should be taken to close the gaps?)
P – Plan
(What resources may be utilized to achieve success?)
23. Change
Change refers to metamorphosis, an
overhaul, a measured difference; but what
is really is just a process of substituting
something old for something new and
expectedly better.
24. Mission Statement
A mission statement defines our purpose.
It’s what we ultimately want to achieve in
our lives or careers, and expressed in a
very specific, measurable way. It helps us
identify our core values.
25. Vision Statement
In contrast, a vision statement is a bit more
emotional because it defines our core
values and how we apply these values to
our mission. It also tends to provide the
general directions that guide the course of
our lives, even the choices we would have
to make about our future careers.
