This document compares David and Goliath, with David representing faith and Goliath representing unbelief. It notes that Goliath wore heavy armor because he was afraid, while David trusted in God's power with only a sling and five stones. Each of David's five stones represented an important quality: courage, confidence, preparation, trust, and victory. Having these qualities enabled David to overcome the giant Goliath through faith in God.

David And Goliath
1. “Then he took his staff in his
hand; and he chose for himself
five smooth stones from the
brook, and put them in a
shepherd's bag, in a pouch
which he had, and his sling was
in his hand. And he drew near
to the Philistine”
1 Samuel 17:40
2. In this text, we met a young ordinary
youth who had a “giant of a problem
standing between him,” and what God
intended for him to do!
Up to this point, he was just a
shepherd boy, not even his family
expected too much out of him, he was
the youngest of eight boys.
His job was to take care of the sheep
and to be a delivery boy, he also wrote
choruses and songs part time.
3. 1. Goliath is the giant of unbelief.
Both armies stood upon the mountain tops, but
the battle was to be fought in the valley below, we can
learn from that. Goliath was dressed from head to toe
in all manner of armour.
His head was covered with a helmet of brass.
His body was covered with an armoured coat of iron
mail.
His shoulders were covered with a coat of brass.
His legs were covered with bronze shin armour.
He carried an iron spear
He needed one strong man to carry his shield before
him.
4. If Goliath was the great champion
he proclaimed to be. “WHAT WAS
HE AFRAID OF?” Why did he
need all this armour?
Or did he dress to impress others,
to act out the great champion?
Why did he need all this
protection? Who was he afraid of?
5. It looked like everyone was
terrified of this giant, see 1
Samuel 17:11 “When Saul
and all Israel heard these
words of the Philistine, they
were dismayed and greatly
afraid.”
6. For where there is no faith, fear
is always near by. There is a giant
that we face everyday, and it is
called the giant of unbelief
which God calls evil
see, Hebrews 3:12
“Beware, brethren, lest there be
in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief in departing from the
7. Goliath did not believe in
the power of God. He did
not believe in the
miraculous. He did not
believe that a small boy was
to be his downfall and
death.
8. 2. David is the giant of faith.
Note what David said,
“Who is this unclean, sinful
noise that should dare to
defy, the people of the ONE
and only TRUE GOD.”
9. Why was David the only one
present to see that Goliath stood
no chance against the living God?
David's brothers mocked David by
saying, “That he had only come to
see the battle.” But what battle?
No! David came not to see the
battle, but to do battle, as he
battled with the enemy of the
Lord, Goliath.
10. David never needed Saul's
armour, because David was not
going to fight Goliath, BUT TO KILL
HIM. Goliath trusted in all his
armour, but David trusted in the
Lord, and he run to Goliath, and
Goliath fell that day. ONE stone and
Goliath laid dead. BUT why did
David have FIVE stones in his
pouch?
11. 1. STONE ONE, COURAGE.
The first stone represents
COURAGE - David was not afraid
to face the enemy. “Do not
worry about a thing,” David told
Saul. “I will go and fight this
Philistine!” 1 Samuel 17:32.
It also takes courage to fight the
giants you will face in your life.
12. 2. STONE TWO, CONFIDENCE.
The second stone represents CONFIDENCE -
As a shepherd, David often had to protect
the sheep from wild animals. This gave him
the confidence he needed to face the giant.
“The LORD who saved me from the claws of
the lion and the bear will save me from this
Philistine!” 1 Samuel 17:37.
Like David, you can have confidence that
God will help you overcome the problems
you face each day.
13. 3. STONE THREE, PREPARATION.
The third stone represents PREPARATION -
David did not go to face the giant
unprepared. He went down to the stream
and picked out five smooth stones and put
them in his shepherd's bag. Then, armed
with his shepherd's staff and sling, he started
out to fight Goliath. (1 Samuel 17:40).
It is important for you to do everything
possible to be certain you are prepared to
face the challenges which you will meet in
your daily life.
14. 4. STONE FOUR, TRUST.
The fourth stone represents TRUST - David
did not trust in his own ability to slay the
giant.
When Goliath shouted at David, cursed
him, and was ready to kill him, David
said, “You come to me with a sword and
spear, but I come to you in the name of the
LORD God Almighty” 1 Samuel 17:45.
When you face problems, put your trust in
God, not in your own ability.
15. 5. STONE FIVE, VICTORY.
The fifth stone represents VICTORY
– “It is God's battle, not ours,”
David said. That is why David was
able to win the victory over the
giant with only a stone and sling. (1
Samuel 17:50).
When you turn your battles over to
God, you will have the victory over
the giants in your life.
16. So, the next time you
are facing a giant in
your life, remember
the story of David and
Goliath, and his five
smooth stones.
