Information Technology Industry:
The Indian software and computer services industry has experienced explosive
growth in recent years. Despite growth rates falling to an estimated 26% in 2002/3
(from an average of about 50% per annum previously), it remains one of the fastest
growing sectors of the Indian economy, employing over 650,000 people in March
2003. The annual growth rate of India’s software exports has been consistently
over 50 % since 1991 India’s contribution to the Global IT Products Market is a
meager 0.2 % of $180 billion. IT Products contribute just 4% of the $7.7 Billion
Software Industry Exports. Many Indian companies like I-Flex, TCS, Infosys,
ICICI InfoTech, Ramco Systems, and Polaris etc are trying their best to increase
their portfolio of IT Products. The main challenge these companies are facing, is to
increase the Market Share in the products market. Indian Software Industry
accounted for about 2% of India’s GDP in FY02. In FY01, its share was 1.5% of
the global market ($387 billion). In FY02, the size of the industry was Rs 485
billion of which exports accounted for 76% and domestic software 24%. India
exports software to 102 countries.
The domestic IT market is small and is driven by big corporate companies.
NASSCOM estimates the total domestic market for software and services to be
US$2.55 billion. Growth in the domestic market fell from 18% in 2001-2 to an
estimated 13% in 2002-3, largely due to a slowdown in spending by manufacturing
and banking sectors. Dataquest, on the other hand, has reported that domestic IT
spending actually fell, by 17% in 2002-3, but predicts a return to growth in 2003-4.
Segmentation of Software Products: The various software products can be
segmented into the following categories:
• Banking & Financial Software
• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
• Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
• Supply Chain Management (SCM)
• Embedded Software
• Telecom Software
• Consumer Software Segment

Market Drivers
The need for improved customer service and high global adoption shall drive the
Indian CRM market. This will depend on the quality of their customer interactions
to retain existing customers and win new ones.
The high cost of implementation and low awareness of the accruing benefits is
going to prove a major deterrent.
Indian Software Industry 1995-2000
Future outlook
The government and the banking finance services and insurance (BFSI) sector
drove growth in 2002-03. The year ahead is likely to see the emergence of niche
players with domain expertise. As in the year gone by, increasing demand for
products from verticals such as BFSI will be a major driver for the development of
software products.
