Review of three dub reggae albums 'Harry Mudie Meets King Tubby At Dub Conference' reissued by Moodisc on vinyl coincidentally with King Tubby's murder in Jamaica, written by Grant Goddard in April 1989 for City Limits magazine.

It's coincidence rather than cash-in that these LPs mixed by reggae dubmaster
King Tubby should appear so soon after his tragic death at the hands of an
opportunist gunman. These are three of around a dozen albums produced by
Harry Mudie that have just been reissued after more than a decade out of
print. The quality that set Mudie apart from other, more renowned, reggae
producers was his use of a string section as an integral part of his songs, not
merely tacked on as an afterthought. This combination of sweet strings and
rockin' rhythms is best known on his recordings of singer John Holt and the
1970 near-hit 'Leaving Rome.' Versions of these crop up amongst the 29
instrumental remixes that make up these three volumes, but are here in
radically different form with the Tubby trademarks of booming drums, echoed
rhythms and percussion drops.
Two hours of dub may seem a little excessive yet, because the LPs were
mixed separately in '76-8, they maintain a freshness of ideas and use excellent
rhythm tracks produced with Mudie's usual attention to detail. King Tubby's
remix skills received scant attention outside the reggae world and, sadly,
always remained a sideline to his electrical repair business and sound system
work. Dub was the only truly innovative popular music to emerge from the '70s
and Tubby completely redefined the creative limits of what could be produced
in a basic 4-track recording studio. His legacy is embodied in at least twelve
dub LPs that are essential to any reggae collection. It's good to know that three
of these are available again at long last.
