The document discusses different styles of mountain biking and the appropriate bike choices for each style. It describes cross-country riding on easy to moderate trails, requiring bikes weighing 9-13 kg with front suspension. All-mountain riding involves tougher trails, suited for bikes with front and rear suspension of 125-180mm. Downhill racing requires heavier bikes of 16-20kg with large disc brakes and front and rear suspension. Freeride/dirt jumping are more aggressive and involve stunts, suited for bikes weighing 13-18kg with 150-250mm of suspension.

3. The Mountain
Biking Style…
…determines
your choice
of bike.
This is the
Cross-Country (XC)
course used at the 2009 UCI
world championships.
4. Riding from point-to-point or in a loop over:
• a mix of rough forest paths
• singletrack or doubletrack
• smooth fireroads
• or even paved paths connecting other trails
5. Technical complexity
of the trails:
• easy
• or moderate
Choice of Bike
Weight:
Around 9-13 kilos
Suspension:
front and sometimes rear
0-125 millimetres of suspension
6. All-mountain (AM) Race
Trails nearly impossible
even to experienced riders
are more often dubbed
"all-mountain", "freeride",
or "downhill".
Choice of Bike:
Components:
Stronger than XC models
Weight:
suitable for climbing and descending
on a variety of terrain
Suspension:
front and rear
125-180 millimetres of suspension
7. Racing-Oriented Downhill Riding
Choice of Bike:
Components:
large disc brakes and heavier frame tubing
Weight:
around 16-20 kilos
Suspension:
front and rear
8. Freeride / Big Hit / Hucking
requires more skill and aggressive techniques than XC
• riding trails
• jumping
• performing stunts racing downhill
• riding over elevated trails made of
interconnecting bridges and logs
Choice of Bike:
Weight:
13-18 kilos
Suspension:
front and rear
150-250 millimeters of suspension
9. Going Airborne by
Dirt Jumping (DJ)
The rider 'takes off' from the
'landing‘, which is a shaped mounds
of dirt or soil and aims to land back
on it. generally smaller
Components:
simpler with fewer components to
break or cause the rider injury
should it crash.
Choice of Bike Weight:
built from sturdier materials, such
as, steel to handle repeated heavy
impacts of crashes and bails.
Suspension:
more manoeuvrable hardtails for
backflips
Typical hardtails:
only front suspension
0-100 millimetres of suspension
