diseases (such as asthma) during the last 3 decades in

the main contributor to air pollution in most urban areas,
and there is evidence that living near high-traffic roads
is associated with impaired respiratory health

•  Few of us know, or worry, about the level of
stuff coming into (and rapidly exiting) the
economy.
•  More than half, often as much as two-
thirds, gets written off as waste.
•  Being a “conscious” or “green” consumer should
be considered not just a lifestyle choice, but a
global necessity.

HOW WE SHOP & PURCHASE

•  It’s simple - buy less! (easiest way to reduce
waste is by not creating new waste)
•  Check for sources or origin of products when
you buy them - buy locally-sourced and locally-
produced stuff, as much as possible
•  ‘Use-and-throw’ no more. Buy durable, long-
lasting products
•  Give preference to buy from companies and
brands who are investing in sustainability & CSR

How can you travel better?
1.  Engage in ‘responsible, sustainable tourism’ or ecotourism
2.  Less air travel, where possible, and offset you carbon
emissions
3.  Create less waste, and do not dispose your waste (cigarette
butts, bottles, batteries, etc) irresponsibly
4.  Avoid buying bottled water, plastic objects, toys, corals, sea
shells and stones
5.  Be more proactive – for ex. participate in beach or
underwater clean-ups and other local projects
54

THE WAY WE TRAVEL

Responsible tourism means to travel in a way that minimises
negative impact on the environment i.e.
1.  Get local – food, accommodation, etc as this helps local
businesses.
2.  Chose resorts that take social and environmental
sustainability seriously
3.  Reduce your carbon emissions, don’t just offset them
i.e. travel closer to home and take less flights
4.  Try alternative holidays where you actively participate
in environmental or community related projects.
55
