5. Respiratory System
• This human organ system is responsible for
exchange of gases.
• The respiratory system (or ventilatory system)
is the biological system that introduces
respiratory gases to the interior and
performs gas exchange.
6. • Nose-The nose is responsible in smelling
something.
• Pharynx-The pharynx is located at the back of
the throat.
• Larynx- The Larynx or voice box is located
between the pharynx and the trachea.
Humans use the larynx to breathe, talk, and
swallow.
Parts of the Respiratory System
7. Parts of the Respiratory System
• Trachea-The trachea, or windpipe, is a bony
tube portion of the respiratory tract that
connects the larynx with the bronchial parts of
the lungs that about 13 centimeters long.
• Bronchus-(plural-bronchi) A bronchus is a
passage of airway in the respiratory tract that
conducts air into the lungs.
8. Parts of the Respiratory System
• Bronchioles-The bronchioles or bronchioli are
the first passageways by which the air passes
through the nose or mouth to the air sacs of
the lungs in which branches no longer
contain cartilage or glands in their submucosa.
• Lungs-The Lungs are the organs of
respiration.
9. Parts of the Respiratory System
• Alveoli-The alveoli is the part of the
respiratory system that is responsible for gas
exchange.
• Diaphragm-The diaphragm is the major
muscle of respiration.
28. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Colds-In the case of a cold,
the mucous membrane is
fighting any one of over
200 viruses. If the immune
system is unsuccessful in
warding off such a virus,
the nasal passages and
other parts of the upper
respiratory tract become
inflamed, swollen, and
congested, thus interfering
with the breathing process.
29. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Pharyngitis-inflammation
of the pharynx, commonly
known as the sore throat.
30. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Laryngitis-inflammation of
the larynx, usually
accompanied by
hoarseness and coughing.
31. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Asthma- Asthma is the
common chronic
inflammatory disease of
the airways characterized
by variable and recurring
symptoms, reversible
airflow obstruction, and
bronchospasm.
32. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Acute bronchitis-is
characterized by the
development of a cough,
with or without the
production of sputum,
mucus that is expectorated
(coughed up) from the
respiratory tract.
33. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Chronic bronchitis- a type
of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease. It is
characterized by the
presence of a productive
cough that lasts for three
months or more per year
for at least two years.
34. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Obstructive lung disease-is
a category of respiratory
disease characterized
by airway obstruction.
35. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
Pneumonia - is
an inflammatory condition of
the lung, affecting primarily
the microscopic air sacs
known as alveoli. It is usually
caused by infection
with viruses or bacteria and
less commonly
other microorganisms,
certain drugs and other
conditions such as
autoimmune diseases.
36. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
• Emphysema-Emphysema is
a long-term, progressive
disease of the lungs that
primarily causes shortness
of breath. Subcutaneous
emphysema is a condition
when gas or air is present
in the subcutaneous layer
of the skin.
37. Diseases in the
Respiratory System
Lung Cancer- Lung Cancer is a
disease characterized by
uncontrolled cell
growth in tissues of the lung.
38. Treatments
• Pulmonology involves the study and
treatment of respiratory diseases and
disorders. A pulmonary physician, or
pulmonologist, treats diseases of the lungs,
airways, and all other respiratory organs.
39. Treatments
• Antihistamines are used to block the body's
production of histamines that cause allergy
symptoms. Cold medicines usually contain
antihistamines, decongestants, and non-
narcotic analgesics like aspirin.
40. Treatments
• Halotherapy is the use of salt vapor to treat
respiratory ailments, skin irritations, and
combat mental lethargy.
41. Treatments
• Lung transplant. A transplant usually is
considered only in people whose life
expectancy is felt to be less than two to three
years.
