Spice Boyz Hold Soca Warriors to a 2-all Draw
Sunday 20th
March, 2016-St. George’s-
It was an electric atmosphere at the National Athletic Stadium as the home crowd
cheered on the Spice Boyz in their international friendly against Trinidad’s Soca
Warriors. Grenada seemed assured of a 2-1 victory over neighbours Trinidad but an
extra time goal from forward Marcus Joseph denied an outright win.
Grenada’s local and foreign based players came together to create a solid defensive
line and robust attacking line that showed on the field. Grenada’s goal keeper Jason
Belfon was also entertaining and clinical as he stopped many of Trinidad’s
attempts.
Trinidad was first to find the net through forward Shahdon Winchester in the 25th
minute. While it looked to be 1-0 at half time, Grenada forward Jamal Ray Charles
who plays for Trinidad professional team W Connection broke through the defence
to equalize in the 45+ minute.
In the second half, both teams squandered chances for goals until Veteran Jake
Rennie converted in the 49th
minute with a superb goal. Then an equalizing goal
from forward Marcus Joseph in the 93rd minute of play secured a 2-2 draw for
Trinidad who is preparing for World Cup qualifiers.
Grenada’s Head Coach Andrew Munroe was high in praise of his team’s
performance. “What we tried to do was bring something new to the players in the
technical department. The players grabbed onto it and we were successful tonight.”
Looking forward to the CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup Qualifiers against Sint Maarten
on Tuesday 22nd
March Coach Munroe said, “Every game we try to get better.
Sometimes we lose concentration but we hope by Tuesday, we will be able to fix
that and give Grenada a big victory.”
Assessing the Spice Boyz, Trinidad and Tobago Head Coach Stephen Hart said,
“Grenada stuck to their game plan very well, they defended well until the end.”
Grenada forward Jamal Ray Charles says it was a good feeling scoring for his
country. “I had more concentration and was comfortable with the ball.” he said.
Defensive midfielder Jake Rennie said, “We had a great performance considering
the length of time in training and this being our first practice match. I always
wanted to score against Trinidad and it is an excellent feeling.”
Reviews from the public have been tremendous thus far. One Facebook poster
remarked, “I thought we looked really good; with the team mostly made up of local
and regional based players, I was pleased.”
2. Grenada will face Sint Maarteen on Tuesday 22nd
March at 7:30pm at Grenada’s
Football and Athletic Stadium in the Scotia Bank CFU Caribbean Men’s Cup
