- Policy background – three pillars here Based on evidence/statistics – won't repeat %ages of SMEs to EU economy, etc – but notice: SMEs creat 85% of all NEW jobs! But also a great challenge: Eurobarometer down to 37% preference to be self-employed, less than many of our major global competitors
- Part of our response to this challenge is the Action Plan, adopted first week of Jan 2013. Emphasise action at the right and appropriate levels: national, regional, local as well
- You'll hear a bit more about all of these aspects later today, here is the framework
- • The first key action has been the creation of the European Network of Female Entrepreneurship Ambassadors in 2009. Successful entrepreneurs act as role models to motivate women of all ages to try a career as entrepreneurs. The aim with the ambassadors is to raise awareness and encourage entrepreneurship as a career option for women of all ages by using role models (the ambassadors).In addition, many ambassadors have gone beyond their task to only campaign for female entrepreneurship among women of all ages: they also became actively involved in supporting the establishment of new enterprises. There are 320 ambassadors in 22 European countries taking part in the network. (These countries are: Albania, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom). Thanks to their work more than 250 new women-led enterprises have been created. • Further the Commission inaugurated the European Network of Mentors for Women Entrepreneurs in Warsaw on 15 November 2011 under a Polish Presidency event. This is another action proposed in the SBA Review and aimed at promoting female entrepreneurship in Europe. The Mentors' network reinforces and complements the concrete actions to promote, support and encourage female entrepreneurship that started with the creation of the European Network of Female Entrepreneurship Ambassadors (ENFEA) in 2009. • The Mentors' Network provides advice and support to women entrepreneurs on the start-up, functioning and growth of their enterprises in the early phase of the life of their enterprises (from the second to the fourth year of existence of a new woman-led enterprise). Following a call for proposals, 17 CIP countries form today the European Network of Mentors for Women Entrepreneurs. The Network has currently around 200 mentors. • Finally the 2012 European SME Week Summit organised on 17th October focused exclusively on women's entrepreneurship. The title was: "Women's Entrepreneurship Makes Business Sense". More than 650 participants- mainly women entrepreneurs- and stakeholders participated in parallel workshop and the following areas were discussed: • a) Access to finance for women entrepreneurs. • b) Entrepreneurship education helps to redress the gender imbalance • c) Women in Technology-Based Businesses • d) Women Entrepreneurs with Migrant Background
