SAP and Hitachi LTD have been partners for nearly 20 years. Hitachi has been a service provider to SAP and have received numerous awards including sales and customer satisfaction. More recently Hitachi Data Systems and SAP developed a strategic alliance that are based on three key areas.
What`s new, “Hitachi also unveiled two new Unified Compute Platform (UCP) Select reference solutions leveraging HDS Enterprise NFS platform for both VMware vSphere and Horizon View workloads. These fully validated frameworks speed deployment and reduce risks across data center deployment with explicit architecture for environments taking advantage of Ethernet based storage infrastructure. Hitachi Unified Storage VM with Hitachi NAS 4000 series showcases the architecture to achieve enterprise scalability, capacity efficiency and data protection resiliency required for large scale ESXi cluster. The UCP Select for VMware Horizon View for Heavy Power User workloads uses Hitachi converged infrastructure cells to highlight architecture needed to scale from 55 to 2640 Horizon View linked clone desktops including NAS based user persona data management with a single HUS VM configuration with the ability to scale into thousands as you scale out further ”

So let us have a look to some of these challengesFirst of all, data is growing all the time. Typically our customers tell us that their data growth is about 25-30% and that especially unstructured data like files, email, sharepoint are big data consumers. Protecting data with traditional backup solutions is becoming more and more an issue with backup jobs either failing or not completing within the backup window. It takes just too long to backup.Second challenge is about recovering the right data and within the right recovery window. Data loss is unacceptable of course but also data recovery cannot take hours nor days. In technical or service-level terms we are talking about Recovery Point Objective or how old the most recent copy can be, and Recovery Time Objective or how long it may take to recover data.Finally, we have the data globalization challenge. Data is everywhere, it can be in many locations, many devices, many formats.
We briefly touched on RPO and RTO as the service-level definitions and their impact on which protection solution to use. When looking to the data protection needs it is normally the business that will drive the RPO and RTO to define the availability needs of data. But data protection is not only needed for heavily-used or recent data but during the whole lifecycle of data. Protecting data for 5 or more years is adding even more challenges: how to respond to RPO/RTO, how to execute technology migrations but most importantly, how to minimize costs.This will bring us to some key topics when protecting dataArchive first to backup lessProtect data according to RTO/RPO with local and remote replicationMinimize costs while creating data copies all the time, whether those copies are full clones, snapshots, backups, archives, replicas, etc…
Our overall strategy at HDS is to evolve data protection away from tradition backup, leveraging the advanced capabilities in our storage and software offerings.The first step in easing the backup pain is to reduce the amount of data that needs protecting. Move or archive static and inactive data to a purpose built content store; this will help to reduce production storage costs and speed the backup of the remaining active dataSecondly, leverage the storage-based snapshot and replication technologies in our systems to eliminate the need for backing up large portions of the customer’s data. Make use of specialized tools to ensure application-aware consistency and granularity.Finally, make an instantaneous copy of new data as it is created and send that to a replication or backup repository, without impacting the performance of the application; this eliminates in some cases the need for a scheduled, disruptive backup operation.
So to summarize, we solve our customers’ backup pains with a combination of strategies and technologies.We reduce and eliminate the backup window by first reducing the amount of data that needs to be protected by moving/archiving inactive data to HCP. We leverage storage-based snapshots and replication to further reduce the need for backup. And then we eliminate the backup window completely by applying CDP to everything that’s left.We improve recovery point objectives by again leveraging snapshots and replication, which can be performed far more frequently than traditional backup. CDP can bring the RPO to near zero.And we improve the RTO by enabling faster recoveries because most of the data is stored securely and safely in HCP and does not need to be restored. Restoring from snapshots and failing over to a replication target are also far faster than restoring from traditional backup systems.
