Editor's Notes
Iβd like to start by thanking Angus for first setting this important challenge and then for demonstrating his idea in this video.[possibly address how this could be incorporate into our systems]Featured in Angusβ video demonstration was the open source Etherpad-Lite software.Angus has focused on simultaneous clinical note taking as a way of efficiently entering information into the medical record. In my presentation now, I am going to take a wider perspective as I walk you through our solution to electronic medical record creation on the ward.
At CSC we believe it is not just about recording clinical notes at the bedside but it is about access to timely, accurate information, anywhere anytimeThese are the guiding principles for development of a successful solution that has given doctors access to a virtual medical record
At CSC we believe it is not just about recording clinical notes at the bedside but it is about access to timely, accurate information, anywhere anytime
The solution provides quick and easy access to patient records. In this example the patient list is sorted by ward, but it could also be done by consultant or unit. One or more clinicians can simultaneously access and update a patientβs record.Changes to the medical record are time stamped and the user identified.
This demonstrates that we were able to integrate Etherpad-Lite into our solutions through a simple menu configuration that allows access to a shared document for the patient. Both the user and patient context are automatically passed by the software. While we can demonstrate this we did have issues with the performance of this model over typical secured network connection and a full implementation of this model would require more research to solve this and other implementation challenges.
Our solution already provides a way to record clinical notes β this has been deployed at a number of hospitals in Australia.Instead of using a shared document, we have taken a social media style approach to viewing and updating information in the medical record. This makes it easy to use and provides data control over the different elements that make up the patient record. An alternative approach is to use the familiar social media model of recording notes which is currently a feature of our solution and has been deployed successfully at a number of hospitals in Australia. In this model multiple users are able to record notes at the same time or could be recording observations and clinical orders.
