Term 2: How successfully did Elizabeth I deal with her
problems?
Your Task:
When Elizabeth came to the throne, many people doubted that a woman
could govern country by herself. Elizabeth had to show her people that she
could be as strong ruler.
One of the best ways to boost her image and win loyalty was to tour the
country and let people see her. She could demonstrate how rich and
powerful she was. These tours were successful, but she could only visit a
limited number of places. So, she could only visit a limited number of places.
So, she also used portraits to spread her image around.
Elizabeth kept a tight control over the paintings of her that were available.
At intervals throughout her reign, portraits of the Queen were issued which
were to be copied by artists. No other portraits of the Queen were allowed.
This plan seems to have worked because artists were still copying these
‘official’ paintings years later.
