Key Stage 3 – Year 8
History Homework Booklet
Term 4: Was Cromwell a hero or a villain?
Your task: Oliver Cromwell helped to lead Parliament to victory over King
Charles I in the English Civil War. After the King was executed Cromwell led
England under the title ‘Lord Protector’. Cromwell is known locally as ‘The
Hero of the Fens’ because he stood up for the people. However, others
believe that he was a very strict man who made lots of bad decisions and
caused the massacre of innocent people in Ireland. Through your lessons
you will have been exploring the different interpretations of Oliver
Cromwell and been deciding whether he was a hero or a villain. Cromwell
is seen as a hero by Parliament and this means that he now has a statue
outside the Houses of Parliament. In this homework booklet you will be
explaining the reasons why Cromwell should be have a statue outside
Parliament and why he does not deserve his statue outside Parliament. To
do this you must complete each section in your booklet.
