2. As you can see in the image below, the horror genre is in the top 10 for most successful
movie genre from 1995, this is one of the reasons why I chose a horror movie as we can
clearly see that it is the type of movie that people want to see and so therefore I would earn
more money and sell more tickets in theatres when I sell my product.
If we compare these statistics with other genres that have succeeded more than horror, for
exampleThriller/Suspense movies, which is 5th place then I will be able to explain why I
choose Horror instead ofThriller/Suspense which is more successful.
As you can see in the table Horror has sold less tickets and earned less money than
Thriller/Suspense, however, much less movies have also been created which means that it
is more likely for all of these movies overall to earn more than Horror as there are more
movies that have earned this money. This is also the same with the other genres that are
above Horror as they all have more movies than Horror.
3. If we look at the average gross of the film genres below we can see that Horror is one
of the best. Each movie has an average gross of $19,484,409 in the horror genre. It is
the 5th best with average gross and this relates to my last point of how, this genre has
a less total gross but has less movies. The average gross shows the cost of each movie
worked out by dividing the total gross by the amount of movies there are. With this
we have figured out that Horror movies are actually better at making money for each
single movie than Comedy which is in 1st place for total gross, Drama which is 4th and
Romantic Comedy which is 6th.
4. If we use the figures below to look at the audience figures for each month then we can plan
when our film is released so that we can release it when cinema audience numbers are
highest so there is a higher chance of more people going to view our movie.
August had the highest audience numbers with 17,639,654 UK monthly admissions, so this
would make sense for us to make this month a top priority for our film release.
Our second priority month would be January as this had 17,081,700 cinema admissions.
Our third priority would be December as this had 15,706,221 admissions.
5. Using the other yearly figures below we can finally make a decision that August
would be our aimed release date as this month has continuously been one of the
most popular times in cinema viewings. This is most likely due to the fact that
this is the time of the summer season so people are going to get out of the
house and do activities and also it is the time of summer holidays so people are
off work and school. Especially targeted towards my target audience which are
young adults who are most likely doing small jobs or are going to university or
college so they would benefit as they would be the ones to get this time off to
watch my movie.
6. My chosen film distributor would have to be Miramax as they have distributed many
successful horror movies such as the Scream franchise that have made 80 – 100
million dollars. As they have distributed many horror movies with success then this
shows us that they will also be able to distribute my movie and hopefully make it as
good as success as the others. They also show up as the 10th biggest market share
out of all the distributors from 1995 – 2014 which shows us they are very successful.
7. One successful horror movie that has made a large profit based on the income
gained and the amount spent on making the movie is the fairly low budget
Paranormal Activity, they spent $450,000 on the creation of the movie and got
in return $89,794,733. I would hope to be as successful as this movie by spending
a low budget whilst making a large profit. To do this I would have to sell my
movie in a similar way to Paranormal Activity.
8. To make sure that my movie is successful I will need to
ensure that my advertising reaches the whole world. This
means if possible I shouldn’t limit the amount of countries
that can view my movie. Similarly, like Paranormal Activity, I
should try to share trailers, posters and post on social media
pages to spread the word of my movie and to try and get
people excited for the release of my movie. Paranormal
activity is one specific example of how multiple trailers and
interesting posters can grab the attention of the public and
to get them to go watch my movie. Like Paranormal
Activity, I should also try to make my movie unique and
unlike any movie that has been released recently so that I
can make sure my audience get a brand new experience
with watching horror movies.
9. As you can see in the image below, ticket sales are decreasing. At it’s peak point in 2012
approximately 1.35 billion tickets were sold in cinemas, then this decreased to 1.25 billion
in 2013 and now 1.15 billion in 2014 (although it must be taken into account that the year is
not over yet). As we have seen in the other years however this chart seems to be increasing
and decreasing in pattern, so we can presume that next year these numbers will begin to
increase again. This will help us determine the gaps in years between when people are
going to the cinemas and state a probability of the next best year for selling tickets.
10. M. Night Shyamalan is a very successful horror movie director
with big hits such asThe Sixth Sense, Signs andTheVillage.
Therefore with this information I could analyse his movies and
try to use some of the things that he does in my movie to see if
I can make my movie successful like he has previously done
before.
