- Vin explains that the Burnham quote was a driving force behind President Levy’s ‘Master Plan’ for Ryerson, which he proposed in 2006 (and began being implemented in 2008)
- Vin explains that the master plan consists of three overarching goals. Includes a brief explanation of each goal. Ties into Alicia’s notes on “(image....)As Ryerson’s academic reputation and brand has evolved, so has the public realm of the campus. Signature elements of architectural design, urban landscaping, and a recent transformation of streetscapes are reshaping the downtown core. This is evident in three building projects - the Ryerson Athletics Centre at the Gardens, the Ryerson Gallery and Research Centre in the heart of campus, and a Student Learning Centre on the site of the iconic Sam the Record Man property on Yonge Street. These buildings project a modern and distinctively urban “vibe” of a university that is clearly on the move, ready and willing to innovate and collaborate for the benefit of their students.”

Discuss how these new buildings all project Ryerson’s ‘state-of-the-art-brand’ But there is one glaring exception to this – no, I’m not talking about Kerr Hall – I’m talking about Devonian Square

- Well to answer that question we need to understand how Devonian square was first ‘imagined’. Tracing back the history of Ryerson….
- During this time the Ryerson campus had evolved into a spread of dislocated facilities.
- Hence the conception of Devonian square on the corner of Victoria and Gould street in 1978.
- The problem that arises from this first conception of Devonian square in 1978, goes back to the question Vin was asking, what mark is Devonian square making 33 years later for Ryerson?
- The use of Devonian Pond during the winter as a skating rink is perhaps the best way that Ryerson presents this space to students and the community.
- The other times, this space is quite an eye sore and looks a bit run down.
- Is this too happy? Since the partial closing of Gould and Victoria Street, students have been taking their extra curricular performances, demonstrations, rallies and activities to the middle of the streets.
- And with the newly developed Image Arts building and the Chang Building to either of its sides, and the other new buildings in development, Devonian square is no longer a cohesive space pulling this extrodinary campus together.
