- Introduction:I have been a web developer for the past 7 years and in my line of work I end up helping a lot of small business owners with facebook, both for their personal interests and for their businesses. I was asked here to share some of my knowledge with you so that you might feel comfortable using facebook for researching family history. Meghan and I have teamed up because although I know a fair amount about facebook, she has used it extensively for researching family history and learning about geneology.
- This is what we will cover tonight.WARNING. This is just an overview. Is in no way meant to give you every detail on using facebook. Just the basics, how to get an account and where to get more detailed information.
- Bridge In:I think we all have a pretty good idea of what networking is. At it’s most basic form it is a set of relationships between people.
- Today I want to talk about using Social Media to Network, which just means you will be using internet technology to do it.
- ObjectiveUsing the internet to expand our social networks multiplies our ability to meet and interact with people that may have the information we are looking forSome people use social networking sites for meeting new friends, other's use it to find old friends. Then there are those who use it to find people who have the same problems or interests they have, this is called niche networking.
- Just to get some idea of the audience today, I have a few questions.Feel free to ask questions. Is there anything in particular you hope to learn today?
- Learning Objective:Share with you social network called FACEBOOK that will be a great tool for all of you. By the end of this presentation you should have enough information for you decide if you think this will help you and you will know how to get started.
- Review stats. It’s just sheer numbers that make facebook a useful tool.Canadians have 190 friends.
- So, you can think about who you want to be online. You may want to start out fairly anonymous until you get used to the tools.
- All the details are on these pages but here are some highlights:Choosing to make your information public is exactly what it sounds like: anyone, including people off of Facebook, will be able to see it.As a general rule, you should assume that if you do not see a sharing icon (which I will show you), the information will be publicly available.Certain information is always publically available:NameProfile pic if you choose to use oneNetworksUsername and ID which allows you to give links to your page.From FACEBOOKWhile you are allowing us to use the information we receive about you, you always own all of your information. Your trust is important to us, which is why we don't share information we receive about you with others unless we have:received your permission;given you notice, such as by telling you about it in this policy; orremoved your name or any other personally identifying information from it.You can deactivate or delete your account at any time.
- If you are new to social networks there are going to be a lot of new terms to get used to. Here are a few.Does anybody want to take a stab at telling us what some of these words might mean in relationship to Facebook? Some we will cover today but some we won’t have time to.

- Your Name, Gender, Profile Picture and Networks are visible so real world friends can recognize you.Here is where you can hide your birthdate from other users, but Facebook will have it.Showing date will get you birthday wishes.Giving up a birthdate is hard to do, but Facebook is trying to ensure each user is a real person. Give birthdate tip.
- Once you have an account, this is what you will see. Facebook just recently went through another massive change by switching to a timeline view, which is how your profile will appear to you and others depending on your privacy settings. Your news feed is where you will see all the information coming in to you from the people you have friended or subscribed to and the pages you like.
- Three main ways to follow others to get a steady stream of information onto your wallSubscribing:All updates: Everything your friend postsMost updates: The amount you'd normally seeImportant updates only: Just highlights, like a new job or move Subscribe to Interesting PeopleThe Subscribe button also lets you hear from interesting people you're not friends with—like journalists, artists and political figures. If you see a Subscribe button on your favorite blogger's profile, this means you can subscribe. Just click the button to get their public updates right in your News Feed.
- There are fundamental differences between a Profile and a Page. You will use a personal profile to connect personally with people while a page is usually something that is more public like a business or a community. As family history researchers you may want to use one or the other or both.
- Audience selector is available as a global, default setting or inline on each post.
- Meghan, describe how your used your community page to find information on your family history.Here I did a search on one of my family names. These particular Haslers are not familiar to me but how exciting would it be if they were.
- There are many, many facebook pages that are public and offer all kinds of information and tips on how to do family research. You can ‘like’ these pages and have new information stream into your profile on a daily bases. This way you don’t have to go to each site individually to find out what's new.
