2. Analysis of the front cover
Simon Cowell ,a famous iconic man of
the music industry and has been
chosen for the Christmas issue of
NME.
NME have chosen to use a medium to
close up shot to portray him as an evil
character as the indexical sign is
shown through his facial features. Also
NME have chosen to show Simon
Cowell as an evil character by the
phrase chosen “The Grinch Speaks”.
NME cleverly composed the image to
the right and put the important
information on the left attracting more
customers as there are “6 free
posters” grabbing our attention. The
reason is because magazines will
overlap therefore the right hand side
would be covered.

3. Analysis of the front cover
3By Hemal
The image on the front cover is
important because it draws
attention to the magazine
attracting customers interested in
the picture.
•What type of font is used?
The font is bold, sharp and in
your face
•Why do you think this font has
been chosen?
This is done to catch your eye.
•Is there a website for the
magazine referred to?
Yes, http://www.nme.com/
•Why do you think this is?
So people can purchase the
magazine online as more and
more people use technology.
•Who is producing this
magazine?
IPC media
•Do institutional factors affect the
look of the magazine?
Yes because the layout is all
similar.
•How much is the magazine?
£3.99
•Where are we told how much it is?
We are told on the front cover inside
the barcode box.
•What representational issues can
you identify (e.g. gender, stereotype,
positive/negative, mediation)
I don't think the issue has a gender
specific audience as Simon cowell
appeals to both male and female
genders. Also I don't think there is a
stereotype involved. I think it has a
negative mediation as it compares
simon cowell to “the Grinch” which is
negative as the Grinch steals
Christmas, thus appealing to the
issue as it is a Christmas issue.
•How is language targeting the
audience?
The language used is targeting a
younger audience as the word
‘Grinch’ is used on the front cover,
showing a children's movie which
makes it suitable for the target
audience.
4. Analysis of the contents
page
By Hemal 4
•Give a denotative description of the layout
of the contents page
The colour scheme is red and white. There
is a red banner with the name of the
magazine at the top left hand corner of the
double page. There’s a close up head shot
of Jay Z on the left hand side of the left
page, with a number fifty, indicating the
page number. There are screen shots of
the pages with the interviews of Lady Gaga
and Dave Grohl on the bottom of the left
page. There are a wide number of text
boxes across the double page containing
information on what’s on what page. On the
right page there are images of various
music artists. At the very bottom there is a
footer showing the website, date, page
number and ‘Q’ logo.
How many fonts have been used and why?
There are quite a few different fonts going
from big to small and the subtitles are in bold.
The font is sharp which are like the music
artists.
•What images have been used and why?
The images range from pop artists to a hip
hop artist and then to an indie rock artist. This
is used so the magazine can capture a wider
target audience.
•Analyse the representational
issues in the images
Jay Z an iconic rapper is being
represented in a ‘rude boy’ way
how rappers are usually
stereotyped as Rappers are
usually represented in a tough,
gangster way exactly how Jay z is
represented in the picture which
influence other people to be a
gangster or look tough .
•Give a connotative analysis
of the layout of the contents
page
The image of Jay Z, which is
a close up of his head,
suggests how powerful he is.
Also he shows no emotion in
his picture almost like he is
not phased by much,
showing authority. The red
background shows us that he
can be a dangerous man but
only half of his face is red so
this suggests there is a less
aggressive side to the iconic
rapper.
5. Analysis of a double page
spread
By Hemal 5
•How does this attract the audience?
This will attract the audience as it will lead to the picture of
lady gaga and explain the main points without getting put
off by reading a lot of copy.
•Give a denotative description of the layout
On the left hand side of the page there is
lady gaga posing with a saying ‘What I’ve
learned’. On the right hand side is where the
copy is. There are three columns and in the
middle is the heading. On the bottom left is
the date and the bottom right is the symbol of
the ‘Q’ magazine.
•Give a connotative analysis of the layout
Lady gaga a pop icon is used with a medium
shot of her to attract the audience. This could
attract both a male and female audience.
Women want her body and men like her
body.
•What images have been used and why?
The article is about lady gaga hence why
they put a picture of her next to it. Also if a
magazine just had copy it would put the
reader of so the picture is there to entice the
reader.
•Give an analysis of the representational
issues in the images
Lady gaga posses in a sexual way therefore
is represented as a sex symbol. She can be
a negative role model towards women
because women want to have her perfect
body but it can be airbrushed. Also it
demoralises women as they are seen as
objects more than people. Lady gaga
represents herself to be a sex object.
•Discuss the register, how does
this target the audience and why?
Give examples
This targets the audience as lady
gagas pose figure attracts both
male and female readers. Men
may see her as a sexual object
whereas women may see her as
a role model.
•Discuss the use of colour using
denotation and connotation
The main colours are Red White
and black. I think the red is to
represent passion as lady gaga
posses in a sexual way.
•How does the content target the
audience?
The content may target a certain
audience by the gossip in the
article. Also the use of language
within the content will suit the
target audience.
