NFC or Near field Communication is the technology of future which is
capable of transforming our lives. It is capable of making our life so easy
and comfortable to level never thought before.
Advances in this field and no need for the new infrastructure for this
technology in this event pave the way to the motto for NFC that sees it as
NFC EVERYWHERE
What is NFC?

Near Field Communication, the tap-and-go technology co-invented by
NXP more than ten years ago, has shifted into high gear.
This simple, intuitive technology, which lets you initiate interactions with a
simple touch, is now in millions of smart phones, tablets, and other
consumer electronics, with new devices arriving almost daily.
NFC is a technology for contactless short-
range communication .
To begin with
•It’s a proximity technology
•Eavesdropping is a near impossibility
• NFC is unique in the way it uses energy

The term field is the radiations radiated by the antenna. As name suggests
NEAR FIELDS so its clear that the fields that are in closed vicinity of the
antenna are Near Fields and these are used for NFC.
NFC communicates via magnetic field induction, where two loop antennas
are located within each other's near field, effectively forming an air-core
transformer.
•Frequency of operation is 13.56 MHz
• Working distance with compact standard antennas: up to 20 cm
•Supported data rates: 106, 212, or 424 Kbit/s .

Read/write Mode
In Read/Write Mode, the system performs the functions of a contactless
reader/writer. The system’s NFC interacts with an NFC-enabled device and
either reads data in from the device or writes data out to it.
Power savings
Works in Passive Mode therefore no need of power source for target. It will
act on the power provided by the initiator.
Secure transactions
To increase the security of Read/Write Mode, a Secure Access Module (SAM),
can be used to encrypt data. It verifies your data thus acting doing double
check.

Communication Modes
Peer to Peer Mode
It is used to establish a two-way communication channel between a pair of NFC
enabled devices. Each NFC-enabled can initiate a communication as equals, or
peers. This mode uses either a passive or active communication scheme.
Two-way interactions
Pairing with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, exchange business cards with a colleague, or
receive frequent-flyer points when purchasing an airline ticket is possible.
Power savings
Peer-to-Peer Mode can use a passive communication scheme. Only one device
needs to be active, drawing power to generate the necessary RF field.

Card Emulation Mode
This mode lets the system behave as an compliant contactless smartcard. This
means that the NFC-enabled device can be used in the existing contactless card
infrastructure, for things like ticketing, access control, contactless payments etc.
Power savings
Card Emulation Mode saves power by using passive communication. In this
mode, the smartcard or NFC device modulates the RF field generated by the
initiator of the transaction, which is likely to be a contactless reader in a
building-access or payment application. This results in very long lifetime in the
field.

Where NFC stands In World?

NFC v/s RFID
NFC and RFID, both the technologies are for short range. NFC can be referred
as the advance version of RFID as it is having few additional features compared
to RFID.
Range of RFID is less than 40m and frequency of operation vary depending
upon the application. Frequency may vary from LF (120 to 150 kHz), HF (13.56
MHz) and UHF(433 to 900 MHz).
NFC is having compatibilty with the RFID system infrastructure and in addition
enable peer to peer mode that in fact makes data transfer possible between
two devices.
RFID technology can be replaced by NFC in many fields like door locking etc but
not in all especially in logistics and retails due to its low cost.

Conventional keys can be copied inexpensively at corner shops, and
research into 3D printing shows how easy it could soon be to replicate
even sophisticated high-security metal keys. NFC key can provide high
security level with its ease to carry.

NFC and IoT
Today’s homes are increasingly connected. Everyday appliances are connecting
to the Internet. IoT is redefining our at home environment and creating new
way to manage energy.
Why NFC is important for IoT?
NFC enables to connect new devices to system just by one touch thus bringing
convenience. Parental controls can easily be applied to a set-top box or TV, to
ensure that kids only watch suitable channels for a specified period of time.

Near field Communication or NFC is an efficient technology that is capable
of transforming lives of other. It is technology with short range that
communicate with other devices with the intent to whisper which in fact
turning it into one of the most secure technology to transfer data even at
crowded place.
NFC compatibility with the present
infrastructure of RFID also let it become
suitable technology for expansion.
No one can even imagine the future
without NFC as
NFC will be everywhere!!!

  • 3. Motivation 3 NFC or Near field Communication is the technology of future which is capable of transforming our lives. It is capable of making our life so easy and comfortable to level never thought before. Advances in this field and no need for the new infrastructure for this technology in this event pave the way to the motto for NFC that sees it as NFC EVERYWHERE
  • 4. What is NFC? 4 Near Field Communication, the tap-and-go technology co-invented by NXP more than ten years ago, has shifted into high gear. This simple, intuitive technology, which lets you initiate interactions with a simple touch, is now in millions of smart phones, tablets, and other consumer electronics, with new devices arriving almost daily. NFC is a technology for contactless short- range communication . To begin with •It’s a proximity technology •Eavesdropping is a near impossibility • NFC is unique in the way it uses energy
  • 5. Technical Overview 5 The term field is the radiations radiated by the antenna. As name suggests NEAR FIELDS so its clear that the fields that are in closed vicinity of the antenna are Near Fields and these are used for NFC. NFC communicates via magnetic field induction, where two loop antennas are located within each other's near field, effectively forming an air-core transformer. •Frequency of operation is 13.56 MHz • Working distance with compact standard antennas: up to 20 cm •Supported data rates: 106, 212, or 424 Kbit/s .

Technical Overview 6 Communication Schemes Passive Communication Active Communication The initiating device produces carrier field, and the target device, when introduced to this field, uses it to draw energy. The initiator and the target both generate an RF field. Each side transmits data by modifying its own field.

  • 8. Technical Overview 8 Communication Modes Read/write Mode In Read/Write Mode, the system performs the functions of a contactless reader/writer. The system’s NFC interacts with an NFC-enabled device and either reads data in from the device or writes data out to it. Power savings Works in Passive Mode therefore no need of power source for target. It will act on the power provided by the initiator. Secure transactions To increase the security of Read/Write Mode, a Secure Access Module (SAM), can be used to encrypt data. It verifies your data thus acting doing double check.
  • 9. Technical Overview 9 Communication Modes Peer to Peer Mode It is used to establish a two-way communication channel between a pair of NFC enabled devices. Each NFC-enabled can initiate a communication as equals, or peers. This mode uses either a passive or active communication scheme. Two-way interactions Pairing with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, exchange business cards with a colleague, or receive frequent-flyer points when purchasing an airline ticket is possible. Power savings Peer-to-Peer Mode can use a passive communication scheme. Only one device needs to be active, drawing power to generate the necessary RF field.
  • 10. Technical Overview 10 Communication Modes Card Emulation Mode This mode lets the system behave as an compliant contactless smartcard. This means that the NFC-enabled device can be used in the existing contactless card infrastructure, for things like ticketing, access control, contactless payments etc. Power savings Card Emulation Mode saves power by using passive communication. In this mode, the smartcard or NFC device modulates the RF field generated by the initiator of the transaction, which is likely to be a contactless reader in a building-access or payment application. This results in very long lifetime in the field.

  • 13. Where NFC stands In World? 13 NFC v/s RFID NFC and RFID, both the technologies are for short range. NFC can be referred as the advance version of RFID as it is having few additional features compared to RFID. Range of RFID is less than 40m and frequency of operation vary depending upon the application. Frequency may vary from LF (120 to 150 kHz), HF (13.56 MHz) and UHF(433 to 900 MHz). NFC is having compatibilty with the RFID system infrastructure and in addition enable peer to peer mode that in fact makes data transfer possible between two devices. RFID technology can be replaced by NFC in many fields like door locking etc but not in all especially in logistics and retails due to its low cost.

NFC Application 15 NFC for Access Conventional keys can be copied inexpensively at corner shops, and research into 3D printing shows how easy it could soon be to replicate even sophisticated high-security metal keys. NFC key can provide high security level with its ease to carry. NFC Cards/bands can be used inexpensively for •Smart Locking System •Hotel Access •Beyond Building (NFC Bands) NFC enables •Tap-and-enter convenience •Enhanced security •Temporary access for specific people •Counterfeit-proof keys •Remote key distribution and management
  • 16. NFC Application 16 NFC and IoT Today’s homes are increasingly connected. Everyday appliances are connecting to the Internet. IoT is redefining our at home environment and creating new way to manage energy. Why NFC is important for IoT? NFC enables to connect new devices to system just by one touch thus bringing convenience. Parental controls can easily be applied to a set-top box or TV, to ensure that kids only watch suitable channels for a specified period of time. NFC enables •Tap-and-go experiences •Quick pairing with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi •Parental controls •One set payment •Easy access to online maintenance

  • 21. Conclusion 21 Near field Communication or NFC is an efficient technology that is capable of transforming lives of other. It is technology with short range that communicate with other devices with the intent to whisper which in fact turning it into one of the most secure technology to transfer data even at crowded place. NFC compatibility with the present infrastructure of RFID also let it become suitable technology for expansion. No one can even imagine the future without NFC as NFC will be everywhere!!!
