3. We need the earth
to be hot and cold
• The polar bear needs ice
to hunt it’s food
• The tiger needs the
rainforest to hunt
4. Why is the planet
warming?
• Different gases go into air that creates a
blanket around the world
• With more of these gases, the blanket gets
thicker
• Now the blanket is too thick, so more heat
is staying in the earth and not going into
space.
• What makes these gases?
6. •The Apple: South Africa - over 6000 miles 10x UK
•The Tomato: Spain – over 1000 miles
•The Lemon: Chile – 7500 miles 12.5x UK
•
•We could get all of these foods right here in the UK
600 miles
How Many UKs?
7. • Means do we have enough food to support all of the
UK now and in the future?
• World population 7 billion now and is growing:
9 billion in 40 years
• If we import from other countries it means,
they don’t have as much food.
• They have to buy expensive food from other countries, as we are
buying their food. Are they food secure?
• We need more sustainable practices
Food Security
8. Waste
• We waste 7.2 million tonnes food and drink
per year
• Where do you put the food you don’t want?
• Waste packaging from supermarkets
• If we grow our own we don’t need any packaging
• If we grow our own we can reuse the waste to grow more!
• COMPOSTING
10. Benefits of eating
seasonally
• Fresher, more nutritious food
• Less pollution, means helping to stop global warming
– no food miles/no fertilisers
• Less waste: We use the waste to grow more!
• No Packaging
• Food security – both for us and other countries
• Using our own land – don’t need to destroy animals homes
• Save money / Make money
• Fun!
11. Case
Studies
Orford Primary School, Suffolk
Made £200 last winter and selling regularly to local pub.
Used all their own vegetables for Christmas dinner
Milton Church of England School, Cambridgeshire
In 6 months the school had grown and donated £500 worth
of food
Kedington Primary School,
12. Let’s Grow!
Our Aims
• To Create vegetable patch
• Successfully grow 5 different types of vegetables
• Compost our own vegetable waste
• Use our own vegetables for our School dinners
13. How To Grow:
Life Cycle of a carrot
• Plant the seed
• Water
regularly
• Watch it grow
• Harvest the
Carrot
• Eat the Carrot
• Compost
14. From left-overs
to lunch
• Use the ends of the Spring Onion – submerge in warm water just the top
sticking out
• Place on a sunny windowsill
• After 5 days the spring onion will have sprouted again
• Take a pot and fill with soil
• Plant the onion in the soil with the white part
just below the soil
• Water well and place on a windowsill
• Keep watering
• Watch it grow
15. Lets Make the
Vegetable Patch
• Find a suitable area for the patch, measure out beds
• Mix the soil with compost and fertilisers
and spread evenly the around the area
• Measure out the area for each vegetable
• Plant the seeds/seedlings
• Water and watch the vegetables grow
16. • Plastic Bottle Greenhouse
• A pond to encourage frogs and toads
• Hold a farmers market to make money for the
• school
• Make a scarecrow
• Make a herb garden

Notes de l'éditeur
Of all the food we get from other countries we waste 7.2 billion tonnes, that’s one whole chicken dinner a week per household
If you go to the supermarket to buy some apples… why is there plastic? Plastic contributes to CO2 emissions in its production and cannot easily be recycled.
Why are we buying food from countries that we can make here?
We can use the rest of the vegetables to compost
All of the food that we saw traveling all over the world can actually be grown right here.
We have to eat some food at certain times of the year.
What needs warmth? What can we eat in the winter?
Fresher produce – does not have to travel anywhere before it is cooked so tastes better
Reduced CO2 emissions – No food miles/ No fertilisers
Less waste/ reusable waste – No packaging, Reuse scraps of vegetables to grow new or compost to create fertiliser for vegetable garden
Food Security – for us and for the countries where we import the food from
Utilising land – less land take as the garden is already there – means less deforestation and less habitat loss
Save Money/ make money – don’t need to buy from supermarkets, could sell our veg to other businesses
Supporting local businesses – either buying the food directly from the farmers, or selling our own food to the local establishments.
