Each stage of coffee bean processing is crucial. With
many decades of experience Buhler’s know-how in the
field of grinding is unique, especially concerning roller
grinders. Customers can be sure that coffee beans ground
with a Buhler solution always consistently and perfectly
match the requirements for the intended brewing process.
The coffee grinder GrindDefineTM
was specifically designed
for high-precision grinding with exact particle size distri-
butions. It is particularly appropriate for fine grinding and
capsule coffee applications. However, the modular set-up
allows for a wide application range covering instant and
filter coffee as well as espresso and even the very fine
Turkish grind. The GrindDefineTM
uses rolls made of du-
rable cast iron in proven Buhler quality. The particle size is
reduced step by step, thus assuring an optimal result. In
the first stage the roasted coffee beans will be precut. The
second passage – and if required also a third one – grinds
the coffee precisely to the desired particle size distribution
in order to achieve an optimal interaction between water
and coffee during the brewing or extraction process.
The roll gap can be easily controlled and adjusted. Dif-
ferential speed, corrugation form and corrugation number
are just some parameters which permit optimization for
the perfect grinding result. An efficient roll cooling avoids
gap changes due to increasing temperature. The after-
treatment offers several options: A homogenizer unit can
be used for optimal mixing or a compactor for bulk density
adjustment.

The modular construction of the GrindDefineTM
enables
customers to cover all possible requirements in coffee
grinding. Depending on the number of passages an aver-
age particle size as fine as 50µm can be achieved. The
modular design also allows for retrofitting the grinder
with an add-on module at a later stage in order to extend
the application range for new product requirements. The
GrindDefineTM
features many adjustment possibilities. A
reliable construction and a precise gap adjustment assure
consistent product quality. For perfect roll parallelism and
precision the gap can be individually set on both bearing
sides – manually as well as automatically.
The speed of the rolls is leveled smoothly without inter-
mediate steps for an optimal throughput. With directly
driven rolls and frequency converters, the motors always
run at the optimum operating point – which saves valuable
energy. The rolls are fitted to a single package, thus reduc-
ing service downtimes to a minimum. The whole pack-
age with bearing, gap adjustment, differential and rolls is
exchanged within one hour. The exchange module can be
prepared in advance so that the grinder is ready to resume
operations immediately after the change.
The software allows for intuitive control and provides easy
use together with a 12” touch panel. Recipe manage-
ment, monitoring of the operation parameters such as roll
temperature and actual consumption of driving motors
are innovative features of the GrindDefineTM
. The solution
provides a user tracking function (AUDIT trail) for extended
food safety and enhanced traceability. Easy access for
maintenance adds further to the comfort of operability.
