Compelling economics to reduce IT costs
Mobile and web-based application development continues to grow at
astronomical rates. With increasingly better infrastructure and the advent
of smart phones and tablets, every year more of the world’s population
is becoming accessible. And more businesses worldwide are racing to
develop mobile and web applications that allow them to reach consumers
and drive more business.
For many companies developing web and mobile-based applications, a
robust, feature rich, heavier-weight enterprise application server may be
overkill. Whether it’s a growing business, a small company or even a large
enterprise developing simple web applications, many organizations need
a simple application server environment that:
●● ●
Enables rapid mobile and web application creation
●● ●
Provides ease of acquisition
●● ●
Is simple to configure and administrator
●● ●
Has a small footprint
●● ●
Offer fast restarts
At the same time they don’t want to sacrifice reliability, availability
and security. This is where IBM Solution for WebSphere Mobile
and Web Applications on PowerLinux offers significant value.

IBM PowerLinux reliability
IBM Solution for WebSphere Mobile and Web Applications
on PowerLinux runs on the IBM PowerLinux 7R1 and
7R2 servers. Both are highly secure, resilient Linux optimized
systems, enabling faster time-to-delivery. The IBM PowerLinux
7R1 server is a 1-socket server supporting 4, 6 or 8 POWER7+
cores in an energy efficient, 2U rack-optimized form factor.
The IBM PowerLinux 7R2 server is a 2-socket server
supporting 8 or 16 POWER7+ cores in an energy efficient,
2U rack-optimized form factor. Both the 7R1 and the 7R2 offer
large memory capacity, superior performance1 of the
POWER7+ processor, highly efficient and industrial-strength
virtualization and workload-optimizing capabilities for Java
application servers.

Solution Brief
IBM Systems and Technology
IBM PowerLinux rack servers are designed to allow more work
to be processed with less operational disruption.2 Reliability,
availability and serviceability (RAS) capabilities include recovery
from intermittent errors or failover to redundant components,
detection and reporting of failures and impending failures,
and self-healing hardware that automatically initiates actions
to effect error correction, repair or component replacement.
In addition, the Processor Instruction Retry feature provides
for the continuous monitoring of processor status with the
capability to restart a processor if certain errors are detected.
If required, workloads are redirected to alternate processors, all
without disruption to application execution. And, with the Live
Partition Mobility feature of PowerVM®, IBM PowerLinux
rack server workloads can be moved between servers, while
still running, to eliminate planned downtime.
IBM PowerLinux rack servers provide a secure and reliable
environment. In contrast to other architectures and virtualiza-
tion solutions, IBM is known for its unique architecture that
delivers the virtualized environment from bare metal through
the hypervisor. IBM PowerVM is certified at an Evaluated
Assurance Level 4+.3 Zero vulnerabilities have been reported
against PowerVM4 making it a secure, stable environment
for essential infrastructure workloads.
Higher hardware utilization
IBM Solution for WebSphere Mobile and Web Applications on
PowerLinux exploits industrial-strength PowerVM technology
to fully utilize the system. IBM PowerVM for IBM PowerLinux
is available exclusively for the IBM PowerLinux rack server.
This is a new edition of PowerVM that provides enterprise-
level functionality with comparable pricing to x86 virtualization
solutions.
IBM PowerVM for IBM PowerLinux provides the capability
to dynamically adjust system resources to partitions based on
workload demands, and allows virtual machines (VMs) to access
the maximum amount of memory and CPU cores available
in the server. PowerVM features such as Multiple Shared
Processor Pools, Shared Dedicated Capacity and Active
Memory Sharing enable workloads peeks, whether anticipated
or unanticipated, to be handled efficiently by the system’s
resources. The result is greater throughput per server.5
The virtualization efficiencies of IBM PowerVM for
IBM PowerLinux enable consolidation of single workload
servers in a scale-out environment to fewer servers, thus
reducing server sprawl, simplifying server management,
and decreasing IT costs.

Why IBM?
Since 2000, IBM has embraced Linux as strategic to its systems
strategy, starting with investing over US$1 billion to back the
Linux movement. IBM’s support of the Linux community
grabbed the attention of CEOs and CIOs around the globe
and—in partnership with companies like Red Hat and SUSE—
has helped Linux become accepted as a new standard for the
business world.
Through IBM developer participation in Linux communities,
IBM contributes to the development and optimization of
Linux.6 IBM knows that involvement with Linux relies on
collaboration and influence, not on control, and has benefited
greatly from the wisdom of the crowds. And, contributions
made by IBM are recognized and valued by the Linux commu-
nity. In 2011, readers of the Linux Journal selected IBM as
the winner of the “Best Linux Server Vendor” category in its
2011 Readers’ Choice Awards.7
Today, Linux is a fundamental component of IBM’s business—
deeply embedded in hardware like POWER7+ servers, highly
optimized with Linux software built on open source projects
like Samba, Apache Hadoop, and broadly supported by Linux
architects on IBM’s services teams.
IBM has completed tens of thousands of Linux customer
engagements, and facilitated thousands of migrations to Linux.
We offer the widest range of hardware, middleware, and
services products for Linux in the industry. We support Linux
on all modern IBM Systems. And we back IBM PowerLinux
solutions with a full line of implementation, support and
migration services.
