New beginnings: connection – community – contribution . . .
We have just scratched the surface of what ICF CO will be able to offer our community this year.
We have a new board of directors, a fresh focus on developing a powerful and supportive coaching
community, and a continual effort to ensure that the speakers and SIGs we bring in monthly meet
the developmental and professional needs of our chapter's new and experienced coaches.

NEW VOLUNTEERS
We have a number of new volunteers taking on critical roles in our continued community building
focus:
Bryan Fretwell, Suzanne Mariner, and Carl Dierschow own the follow-up and response to
member responses from last month's meeting. Expect to hear more from them in the upcoming
meeting.
Laura Menze is the leader of our new Community Alliance Team in building community alliances
on behalf of ICF CO. She is looking to build her team - see the article in this newsletter titled,
NEW! Community Alliance Team, External Community Building.
Judy Sabah is holding the bigger view of Community Building, inspired by our program last
October. Expect to hear more from her in coming months.
MARCH SPEAKER: LIZ WENDLING
Liz is the Sales Coach for Women and the author of "The Unstoppable Business Woman" and soon
to be released second book, "It's Not What You Sell, It's How You Sell." Liz is driven by her
passion for sales and generating results for her clients. She believes everyone that has a business
is also the sales person for that business. Her interactive presentation will focus on Client-
Attracting Sales Conversations and how to understand what it takes to turn an interested prospect
into an invested client.
This is a not-to-be-missed presentation and a great opportunity to learn how to grow your
business through sales.

corporate world in New York City for ten years, David has landed in the coaching profession to
help people create more meaningful work and life paths via one-on-one coaching, workshops and
online group coaching programs.
Growing up, David was the shy and sensitive type, and over the years has done a lot of
self-growth to become brighter, bolder, more authentic and social while keeping that sensitivity

The Informed Coach: Understanding Critical Distinctions Between Coaching
and Psychotherapy and Knowing When to Make a Referral

Coaches usually work with coachees who have intentionally chosen the unique service of coaching
as distinct from other professions. While they may go to an accountant for tax advice, or a
personal trainer to lose weight, they choose a coach to maximize their potential in a variety of
business, executive, and life situations. The small business owner may hire a coach as an
accountability partner to ensure he follows through with the networking plans he keeps putting
off; a busy corporate executive may hire a coach to set aside a couple of hours a month devoted
to discussing leadership challenges and opportunities; a working mother may hire a coach to
consciously improve her work/life balance. These individuals would be unlikely to hire an attorney,
a caterer, or a psychotherapist to tackle these challenges, so the coach fills a distinct niche.
However, a great coach is keenly aware of when to refer coachees to other professionals.
Distinguishing between coaching and psychotherapy (shortened to “therapy” below), and other
professions, is of particular relevance as the coaching profession continues its development.
Recently in Colorado, the Department of Regulating Agencies (DORA) has sent cease and desist
letters to coaches who were suspected of performing therapy or pseudo-therapy with their
coachees. As a coach, it is important to be clear with your client that you are not providing
therapy, you are not qualified to provide therapy, and that coaching is not therapy. You must also
practice your coaching in this manner in order to retain your integrity as a coach and stay within
the ethical guidelines of coaching. ICF ethics
The boards governing counselors, social workers, and other types of therapists have the ability to
issue cease and desist orders if they believe the person named in the complaint may be
performing therapy or pseudo-therapy. There will be a legal proceeding by the board to determine
if the complaint is valid. The person facing such charges may hire legal experts in order to help
them defend themselves. The course of the findings can take several months, and it can be rather
costly to the person and the business both financially and emotionally. Professional liability
insurance may cover some of your legal costs in such a situation, so it might be time to research
your insurance options. It is possible that the person named in the complaint (in this case, the
coach) could be fined and even face felony charges if it is found that they are practicing therapy
without proper credentials and expertise.

One of our new members, Laura Menze, is leading the charge in a new role for ICF CO as the
leader in building Community Alliances on behalf of ICF CO, and she is looking to build her
team! While the ultimate goal is to build community, awareness, and connection, the Community
Alliances Team will focus on reaching out to:
Business Networking Groups (including local chambers)
Religious Organizations (Churches, Synagogues, Mosques, etc.)
Charities & Non-Profit Organizations
Coaching Schools
Career Service Organizations
Organizations & Associations related to coaching (ASTD, CHRA, etc.)
Political/Government affiliated with Mental Health, (The Mental Health Board, local Senator,
etc.)
Media (TV, Radio, Newspapers, Prominent Local Social Media, etc.)
Some ideas in growing these partnerships might include:
Offering respective members of each organization (ICF-CO & alliance organizations) a
discount on meetings, conferences, or memberships, etc..
Opportunities for ICF-CO members to provide presentations to various organizations and
vice versa.
Developing long-term relationships so that these organizations have an ICF-CO ‘go-to’
person who will be available to them long-term.
Having our finger on the pulse of mental health issues and legislation in CO so that we
might have a say in what would be beneficial for the coaching community.
Getting ICF-CO in the news and creating awareness about coaching and what is available to
people.
Developing opportunities for local communities to tap into our resources for their patrons,
etc.

they can get in tackling this endeavor!

The National Park Services (NPS) is very interested in hiring local ICF Certified coaches.

Questions 1-5 can be provided at the end of the coach's resume under a separate section entitled
NPS Specific Questions or on a separate page as an attachment with the same title.
1. What type of coaching do you engage in (life, career, performance, etc.,)?
2. What do you believe are your coaching strengths and how do you differentiate yourself from
other coaches?
3. What industry segments have you developed a reputation in (e.g. financial, marketing,
operations)?
4. What percentage of time do you spend coaching in the public sector versus private sector?
5. What levels of professionals have you coached (e.g. SES, CEO, GS-15 Division Director,
etc.)?
Once materials are submitted, NPS's Learning and Development office will review them and select

contact the selected coaches, and they will enter into contracts with them directly.

Assist with ICF Colorado workshops - We enjoy providing valuable workshops for our
ICF Colorado members and invite you to be a part of this dynamic, engaging program. We
occasionally need help in identifying interesting workshops, getting info about the workshop
in the montly newsletter, etc.
Identify teleseminar opportunities for ICF Colorado members - Is there a topic you
think the members would get value from or is there a speaker who you know of who would
"WOW" our members? Jump in and be a part of this initiative!
Follow up with ICF Colorado speakers - Assist them with accommodations,
transporation, special needs, etc. - This will allow you to meet some "Movers and Shakers"
in the world of coaching!
Create a member survey asking for feedback on what areas/topics they're interested in
to ensure we're meeting the needs of our members.
Resource Management Support - Go through the existing ICF Colorado resources on file
and determine what's current/beneficial to coaches and what's outdated.
Resource of the Month - Highlight a resource from our library and write a brief summary

So why should coaches and prospective coaches want to join ICF Colorado? As a member of ICF
Colorado, they will join a wonderful community of individuals committed to making a difference in
the lives of their clients, connecting with other coaches, developing themselves, and contributing
to the profession of coaching. Our community includes brand new coaches as well as very
experienced and highly successful ones. We also welcome those who are exploring coaching as a
profession and who have not yet started the process of becoming a coach.
There are many benefits to membership in ICF Colorado starting with being able to attend the
monthly meetings at no additional cost. The educational presentations during our meetings are
delivered by highly successful coaches with special expertise and are but one of the resources
available for helping our members develop and refine their coaching skills and build their
businesses. As a member, one has the opportunity to network with other coaches and participate
in one of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The SIGs are led by experienced coaches, giving
participants the opportunity to learn and engage in lively discussion. Two of the three SIGs are
held immediately prior to the meeting, and we encourage everyone to check them out. In addition
to the SIGs and monthly educational programming, we also have other programs and events such
as workshops and tele-classes, with reduced rates for members.
When highly experienced coaches, coaches building their practices, and those who are just getting
started join together to support their chosen field, magic happens. So please help us grow our
membership and be part of the magic we can create.

Resource Library
The ICF Colorado has a fabulous Resource Library with over a hundred educational tapes and
books addressing such disciplines as leadership coaching, executive and corporate coaching,
career coaching, relationship coaching, life coaching, and spiritual coaching, as well as practice
development for coaches. Its purpose is to promote education, business development and support
for ICF Colorado members.
The Resource Library is perhaps best known for its great selection of audiotapes. Several years
worth of ICF Conference audiotapes include leadership and coaching topics by such high-profile
individuals as Laura Berman-Fortgang, Ken Blanchard, Jack Canfield, Wayne Dyer, Cheryl
Richardson, and Benjamin Zander, along with many other masterful coaches. A variety of other
resources include such great tapes as "High End Coaching" and "Personal Evolution" by Thomas
Leonard and Frederic Hudson's book, The Handbook of Coaching.
In addition to developing leadership and coaching skills, audiotape topics are specific to
self-promotion and networking, use of assessments, therapists as coaches, attraction principles,
team coaching, self- coaching, emotional intelligence, appreciative inquiry, speaking, and getting
published. Members may borrow up to four resources per month upon signing "The Agreement for
Resource Check-Out."
