•The use or the introduction of automatic
equipments or other process or facilities in
construction is called as Automation in construction
Industry
•Key researchers and theorists in the field of robotics
say automated machines are about to migrate from
factories and manufacturing facilities to building and
construction sites as a result of rapid technological
advances which enable them to perform increasingly
complex tasks.
Introduction
ECONOMICS
The impact of automation in construction industry on
•2nd largest employer and contributor to the
economic activity
•10% of India’s GDP is based on the construction
activity
•50% of demand for construction activity in India
comes from infrastructure sector, the rest comes
from industrial, residential and other
construction activities
Construction industry is…
•The projects like “MAKE IN INDIA” and
“SMART CITIES” are an asset for the economic
growth of India through infrastructural projects
•Under the Make in India scheme, it is expected that
$1000 Billion investments for infrastructure sector
would be accomplished in the next few years.
•Present levels of urban infrastructure are
inadequate to meet the demands of the existing
urban population.
•Future cities of India will require smart real estate
and urban infrastructure.
•USD 650 Billion investments in urban infrastructure
estimated over next 20 years.
•100% FDI is allowed under the automatic route for
urban infrastructure areas like urban transport,
water supply, sewerage and sewage treatment
•The Government of India in the Union Budget
2014-15, has announced a project to develop ‘One
Hundred Smart Cities’ and INR 70.6 Billion has been
allocated in the current fiscal year for the same.
AUTOMATION IN CONSTRUCTION
The present scenario of
• Today the construction industry is one of the
most unpracticed fields in terms of automation.
• The importance of construction automation has
grown rapidly in developed countries.
• In developing countries like India, the
construction industries need automation
technologies such as new machineries, electronic
devices , the automation of road, tunnel, and
bridge construction; earthwork, etc.
• The recent developments in the fields of
computer science and robotics have helped to
develop new technologies in the field of
construction industry.

Advantages of automation in construction
• Uniform quality with higher accuracy than that
provided by skilled workers.
• Replacing human operators in tasks that involve hard
physical or monotonous work.
• Replacing humans in tasks performed in dangerous
environments
• Increasing productivity and work efficiency with
reduced costs.
• Economic improvement
• Improving work environment
HADRIAN
Brick-laying robot can build a full-sized house in two days
•The fully-automated machine can erect the
brick frame of a house in merely two days.
•"Hadrian" the robot can work 24 hours a day,
every day of the year, compared with the
lengthy process of building a home with human
capabilities, which could take weeks.
•Developed by Fastbrick Robotics, it is able to
lay 1000 bricks an hour with potential to raise
150 dwellings a year.
•From the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) of a
house structure, the machine will be
directed to load, cut, route and place the bricks
in sequence using a 28-metre telescopic boom.
•It is also versatile, being able to work on a
range of block sizes, including multi-unit
developments.
TELESCOPIC BELT
A telebelt also called as telescopic belt machine handles 0 to
300mm concrete slump and places materials from sand to
rock with 100mm aggregate size.
• Telebelt is the best solution for large construction
sites where long reach and high volume placing is
required such as dams, foundation and footings,
bridge decks, tilt and outdoor slabs, mats pours etc.
• A telebelt comprises of five section telescopic boom
– base steel section and four telescopic high strength
yet lightweight aluminum sections. Telescoping
boom reduces problems with obstacles and saves
labor and time.
The use of telebelt has the following advantages:
•Versatile placement:Easily and quickly clears
obstacles, Ideal for mat pours, backfilling, tilt-up
projects, bridge decks, and slab work.
•Saves time and labor: Performs multiple tasks from
one location, Quick setup and teardown, Places
material at high volumes with less manpower and
handling machinery.

Conclusion
• The importance of implementing automation
technologies is the need of today’s infrastructure
project and construction firms in order to
increase the productivity and good quality of
work.
• Since India has second largest man - power in the
world, automation is not replacements of the
human-power but is an important supplement
that caters to the need of mega-construction and
fast-track construction.
Conclusion (contd.)
• The problems associated with construction work such
as decreasing quality of work, labor shortages, and
safety of labor and working condition of projects can
be overcome by new innovative technologies such as
automation which has the potential to improve the
quality, safety, and productivity of the construction
industry.
• Today, it is evident that the level of automation in
construction is very low in comparison with current
technological advances. That is why we must make
new efforts to increase the automation level of this
important sector.

• It is necessary economic efforts from the
private industry and government to provide
funds and resources for research and
development of robots technology.

  • 16. •The fully-automated machine can erect the brick frame of a house in merely two days. •"Hadrian" the robot can work 24 hours a day, every day of the year, compared with the lengthy process of building a home with human capabilities, which could take weeks. •Developed by Fastbrick Robotics, it is able to lay 1000 bricks an hour with potential to raise 150 dwellings a year.

  • 18. •From the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) of a house structure, the machine will be directed to load, cut, route and place the bricks in sequence using a 28-metre telescopic boom. •It is also versatile, being able to work on a range of block sizes, including multi-unit developments.
  • 19. TELESCOPIC BELT A telebelt also called as telescopic belt machine handles 0 to 300mm concrete slump and places materials from sand to rock with 100mm aggregate size.
  • 20. • Telebelt is the best solution for large construction sites where long reach and high volume placing is required such as dams, foundation and footings, bridge decks, tilt and outdoor slabs, mats pours etc. • A telebelt comprises of five section telescopic boom – base steel section and four telescopic high strength yet lightweight aluminum sections. Telescoping boom reduces problems with obstacles and saves labor and time.

The use of telebelt has the following advantages: •Versatile placement:Easily and quickly clears obstacles, Ideal for mat pours, backfilling, tilt-up projects, bridge decks, and slab work. •Saves time and labor: Performs multiple tasks from one location, Quick setup and teardown, Places material at high volumes with less manpower and handling machinery.

Conclusion • The importance of implementing automation technologies is the need of today’s infrastructure project and construction firms in order to increase the productivity and good quality of work. • Since India has second largest man - power in the world, automation is not replacements of the human-power but is an important supplement that caters to the need of mega-construction and fast-track construction.

Conclusion (contd.) • The problems associated with construction work such as decreasing quality of work, labor shortages, and safety of labor and working condition of projects can be overcome by new innovative technologies such as automation which has the potential to improve the quality, safety, and productivity of the construction industry. • Today, it is evident that the level of automation in construction is very low in comparison with current technological advances. That is why we must make new efforts to increase the automation level of this important sector.
  • 25. Conclusion (contd.) • It is necessary economic efforts from the private industry and government to provide funds and resources for research and development of robots technology.
