2. What makes up the Nervous
System?
• Brain
• Spinal cord
• Nerves
• Sense Organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin)
3. What are the jobs of the Nervous
system?
1. Receive information – both inside and
outside your body (Ex: Wind blowing, low
glucose in your blood)
2. Responds to information – reacts to
stimuli (Ex: soccer ball comes toward
you – you kick the ball)
3. Maintains homeostasis – directs the
body to respond to information (Ex:
hungry – eat, thirsty – drink)
4. Central Nervous System
• The Central nervous system contains the BRAIN
and the SPINAL CORD.
• The CNS is like the CONTROL CENTER of our
bodies.
• The BRAIN allows us to control most of the
functions in our bodies
• The SPINAL CORD connects our brain to our
nerves.
5.
6. Peripheral Nervous System
The peripheral nervous system consists of a
network of NERVES that branch out from
the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM and
CONNECT to the rest of the BODY.
7. Peripheral Nervous System
A total of 43 pairs of nerves make up the
entire PNS. 12 pairs of nerves originate
from the brain. 31 pairs of nerves begin in
the spinal cord.
9. Two Groups of the PNS
Somatic Nervous System – controls
voluntary actions
Ex: Using a fork, tying your shoelaces
Autonomic Nervous System – controls
involuntary actions
Ex: heartbeat, breathing
10. Analogy
The central nervous system is like
_________, while the nerves of the
peripheral nervous system is like the
______________.
