Cloud computing.
It demystifies terms and uncovers concepts associated with the
Cloud-based services.
It discusses the evolution of the Cloud by tracing its
conceptualization back to earlier pioneers.
Overview

Cloud computing has changed the world of information
technology and the internet. It has given rise to a host of
applications and functionality on a global basis. Central to Cloud
computing is how these project implementations are managed.
Project managers’ skills and knowledge is being stretched like
never before in the domain of computers and networking.
Knowing the right questions to ask is very important, i.e., what
segregates my data from other organizations? What level of
access do your employees have to my data? How well does your
company understand how we will utilize this Cloud technology?
Background

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing and storage
capacity as a service to end users. Cloud computing becomes a
desirable solution because it offers a way to increase capacity or
add capabilities instantly without investing in new onsite
infrastructure.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST),
states that Cloud computing is “a model for enabling
convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of
configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers,
storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly
provisioned and released with minimal management effort or
service provider interaction.”
What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing includes subscription or pay-per-use services
that extend information technology capabilities. Services are
provided over the Internet and configured in such a way that the
typical end user is unaware of how the service is provisioned.
Cloud Computing Services (CCS) has become an umbrella term
used by a growing number of virtual information technology
services providers referred to as Cloud Service Providers (CSPs).
What is in the Cloud?

SaaS delivers a single application through an internet browser to
customers using a multi-tenant architecture. On the user’s side,
it requires no investment in hardware or software licensing. On
the provider side, application maintenance is lower when
compared to conventional hosting.
Salesforce.com is an example of an enterprise application. SaaS
is also common for human resources applications. SaaS desktop
applications include programs such as Google Apps and Zoho
Office.
Software as a Service (SaaS)

This form of Cloud computing is associated with vendors such as
IBM who offer on-demand storage and virtual server access on a
scalable basis for contingency planning.
Early adopters have used utility computing primarily for
supplemental requirements. This utilization is changing for some
organizations as they replace their datacenter with utility
computing for business continuity requirements.
Providers are configuring computing and storage solutions that
help IT departments create virtual datacenters for back-up and
data recovery. This enables stitching together larger capacity as
needed over the network for disaster recovery.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Provides an application development environment that allows
users to collaborate, develop, test, deploy, host and maintain
applications in the Cloud.
A common use of PaaS is Cloud-based environments for the
development of enterprise-level software.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Private: Operated for a specific company. It may be managed by
a third party (on/off premises).
Public: Made available to the public at large and is maintained
by an organization selling Cloud-based services.
Community: An infrastructure shared by several organizations
to support a specific user base with similar requirements, i.e.,
security. It may be managed by a third party (on/off premises).
Hybrid: Two or more Clouds (private, public or community).
Intercloud: A future framework for dynamic global application
delivery.
Types of Clouds

Private Cloud:
Is designated for a specific organization
Is managed by the organization or a vendor
May be stored onsite and/or off-site
Private Cloud

Public Cloud:
Are provisioned for the general public or larger groups
Incorporate applications that have mass appeal
Developed and managed by a vendor selling Cloud services
Resources are shared with other organizations
Public Cloud

Community Cloud:
Supports designated communities
who have a shared
interest
May be targeted to multiple
organizations
Embraces communities of practice
Can support sandbox environments
for new concept development
Multi-tenant infrastructure
Community Cloud

Hybrid Cloud:
This model was first introduced in 2008
Composed of two or more Clouds (e.g., private, community, or
public)
It remains a unique entity, but enables data and application
portability
Mix and match of different Clouds and local IT assets to support
the least cost configuration
Hybrid Cloud

Intercloud:
A future conceptual framework (perhaps leveraging artificial
intelligence) that dynamically supports “what makes the most
sense” from a delivery perspective
An elastic mesh of on-demand processing deployed across
multiple data centers.
Large-scale efficiency and flexibility for global application
delivery
Supports delivering applications from one of many locations
based on specific parameters (i.e., user location)
Intercloud

Three approaches to dealing with applications in a Cloud
environment:
Standardization: making applications the same
Harmonization: making applications similar
Integration: making applications talk to each other

Project managers should provision Cloud-based services to
have:
Adaptability: connectivity and can interface with a variety of
devices
Bandwidth: accessibility is instantaneous without delay
Capacity: versatile with respect to changing requirements for
storage
The ABCs of Provisioning

Project managers provide oversight of Cloud-based services
by:
Measuring the amount of usage
Reporting on utilization of specific applications
Controlling system capabilities being made available to specific
user groups
Oversight

Shared services is a customer-provider relationship in which
users access designated services during specified periods or
in specified amounts. Non-Cloud computing examples
include:
Electricity
Sewage
Water
Cable
Telephone
What are Shared Services?

The value-added that project management provides
includes:
Managing shared service relationships that are inherent with
Cloud computing environments
Reviewing contracts to ensure end-to-end service functionality,
including service-level agreements
Improving the understanding of issues impacting the Cloud
computing environments

What factors should the project team consider before
implementing Cloud computing? These types of questions
should be formulated in a checklist:
Would a pay-per-use service model make the most financial
sense?
Does a subscription-based service provide adequate coverage
for the designated user base?
Will the solution provide a value-added to the organization over
premise-based solutions?

Managing communications is performed throughout the

Because terminology is complex, simplify concepts based upon
the user’s understanding
Develop push-pull information distribution
Pull: Establish a repository (i.e., shared folder system)

Contrast different solutions

Project charter details, i.e., authorization
Tactical: Change control

Operational: Configuration management

Managing procurement during the project involves:
Service provider selection
Contract duration, i.e., renewal periods
Special requests, i.e., time and material programming
Service-level agreements
Project Procurement Management

Managing quality during the project involves:
Verification: determine if the system is functioning correctly
Validation: ensure the right system is being built: Design
Qualification (DQ), Installation Qualification, (IQ), Operational
Qualification (OQ), Performance Qualification (PQ), Vendor
Qualification (VQ)
Procedures development: rules that govern operations and
functioning
Training: ensure people are properly trained
Project Quality Management

Managing risk involves evaluation and is performed at the
beginning project:
The value and function of the organization's applications and
data should be determined
Select a Cloud provider who is capable of delivering services
while keeping the risks at an acceptable level
What is their track record and experience?
Develop a probability x impact x detect ability (PID) type matrix
