ARARI report on N2Africa Bridging Year
Progress in Ethiopia (2013)
Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa
TesfayeFeyisa, Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia, ARARI
N2Africa Ethiopia Launch Workshop, ILRI
27-28 February 2014
3. Project Activities
Faba bean demos, variety and input trials
Chickpea demos, variety and input trials
Site selection, Input and land preparation, inoculation and
sowing
Awareness creation for the famers and other stakeholders (field
days and trainings),
Trial management, data collection, analysis, interpretation
and reporting
16. Challenges
• Late budget release and training (esp the first instalment)
• Severe faba bean disease (Chocolate spot and Kormid (new disease))
• Trial theft (for both chickpea and Faba bean)
• Un predictable rainfall pattern (No harvest of chickpea at Jamma site)
• Shortage of vehicle and lack of budget to maintain the old ones
• Distance and accessibility of the locations from the Centres (the roads
are really challenging and threat for the old vehicles)
• Severe soil fertility reduction due to severe top soil loss by erosion
• Late planning of the research activities after the research review at
different levels (overload and competition for resources)
18. Lessons Learnt
Faba bean responded to P but not to the inoculants
Varieties responded differently to different farm management
practices and soil fertility status
Most Faba bean varieties couldn’t over yielded the local variety
with good management except Wayu
Farmers learnt the importance of input and management for
legumes unlike their usual practice
Participation of the higher officials on field days help the
promotion of the technologies
Some farms didn’t respond to both P and Inoculants
19. The Way Forward
Timely training, planning and implementation of the activities
Solution for the Faba bean diseases
Introduction, Collection, and isolation of effective Rhizobial strains for Faba bean
The research activities should pass through the research review system at
different levels to avoid unnecessary overload and for enrichment
The research activities should be done in areas (Woredas) which can easily be
accessed
scaling up of the promising technologies to the farmers
Effect of other nutrients than P and N should be seen for the plots not responding
to P and N
Experience sharing tour to motivate the researches and development workers
